Haven't watching it yet, I thought it would be so boring but I guess I was wrong...
If it's that good I will watch it right now =) (these movies take a little time to get here in Brazil so I still have time to see it )

So...do you guys think Christopher Nolan kicked James Cameron's butt with that movie?

Inception was really good, almost to the level of avatar the first time I watched it but the thing is that movies like inception are good for one or two watches before it gets pretty boring, whereas most if not all of JC's movies make you wanna come back and watch it again and again.

There's an awesome article, basically stating that the whole movie might be a normal dream. That Cobb isn't an extractor, that the others, or most of them, don't exist, etc...

Doubt it. Avatar had a bit more flaws than Inception did :/

I think each character might have been a manifestation in the subconscious of Cobb.

If the end of the movie indicates that Cobb was still in the dream, and the others are still in the first layer waiting for the Kick, how do we know for certain that he was ever awake to begin with?

After all, Miles very early in his introduction said to Cobb, "Come back to the real world."

Was he being metaphorical, or literal?

My theory:

this is true, the whole thing is an ordinary dream (not a shared one) and all the others are projections or manifestations of various parts of Cobb's subconscious.

That alone would be a pretty standard interpretation of the film, but what if we assume that Cobb is actually the wealthy son of a rich businessman who's just died. Being rich and in the public eye, Cobb has to put on a public image to avoid losing face, this image has become so distinct from him that it has its own projection.

The dream then, is Cobb's subconscious' attempt to make sense of his father's death and last words and the children.

I haven't figured out quite how the children fit into this, but its possible that its an extension of Cobb's line about positive emotion givng stronger results and they're there solely to provide positive emotion and a happy ending.

That said, I have to agree with Rachel Dick who, on her formspring said that it doesn't matter whether he was in a dream or not, if he is, the dream has become his reality and who are you to tell him otherwise?

I'm guessing he WASN'T in a dream at the end, considering how the people you know don't change in dreams. not in a normal, growing older way anyway

Alternatively you could take that as a sign that he has accepted the dream as his reality and, because we can't really tell him otherwise, everything acts (or seems to act to him) as if it's the real world.

Quoting Leonardo Da Vinci: "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." This is also the basic idea behind Zen. The other important idea (of which I don't know who's attribute with that): "Keep things as simple as needed, but not simpler". And yes there's a lot of truth in it.
