I saw it yesterday.  It's ok.  It continues the current trend of "face tattoos = space aliens," which is interesting.

blue = alien
green = alien
multiple redundant limbs = alien
laying eggs = alien

I've enjoyed Frank Frazetta's interpretation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' books for years, and they were used on the books' covers believe it or not.   Here are some of his John Carter/Mars artworks:

A couple more of his Mars sketches (note the limbs):

We are planning to go and watch it! It really seems to be interesting and in some ways similar to Avatar. After watching it I'll be able to tell you whether it was worth seeing it...  :)
Well, I watched it today and loved it! Tharks are really nice.

I enjoyed it, although it seems to have been touted as a disastrous failure at the box office for not having achieved blockbuster levels of success.

The worst critics are leaning on components of perceived "originality", while failing to acknowledge the book. It is sad that such critics are given credence. I would like to have seen a better actor playing John Carter.

I am sad for movies from older books like this one in the future, they may never see the light of day now.

Yes, it is sad that the critics can not discern the original from later copies. They think it is the original ideas that lacks originality, when it is often the later, copied ideas that do so. But the critics believe that the later works are the originals and that the old, original works are some plagiarism.

I'm currently reading the book (started today) and curious if it is as good as the film...

Well, the book is far less good than the film I'd say. And there is no "ock ohem ocktei wies Barsoom" in it.
(We should try "ock ohem ocktei wies Eywa'eveng"...  :-\  Anyone has a medal of the kind?)

I saw this a while ago and after having heard so many bad reviews I was pleasantly surprised. It had a bit of a disney fairytale vibe with some pixar-ish weird characters (like that super fast dog-lizard thing) and I like fairytales even if they have all the silly clichés. I really liked the ending, I could've lived with

And now you're telling me there's a book? Need to find that ^^ I hope it's more in the style of the ending of the movie than the whole "hero good, rewarded with woman"-thing, but I wouldn't mind that either I guess

Yes, written 100 years ago.  ;)

There are, in fact, 11 books, and I think they're all pretty similar to the film in the "hero good, woman reward" idea. That's a staple of the sort of adventure story that JC made popular.

I saw "John Carter" last weekend and really enjoyed it. Never read the series of "Mars" books by Burroughs (I'm more of a Tarzan fan) so I don't know how close the film stuck to "A Princess of Mars", but I thought it was a good film overall, and I could definitely see a few similarities to Avatar. Of course, Burroughs published his first "Mars" book LONG before Avatar (not to mention before James Cameron was even born), so if anything JC was influenced by the "Mars" books when he created Avatar.
AFAIK, JEB essentially invented a whole bunch of the plot and structure devices that Avatar uses, and basically used them over and over again across Tarzan, JC and his other series.

Saw John Carter last week with my family and a friend who was visiting. I thought it was pretty good, although it was a bit ``dragged down´´ by a couple of bad clichés and the story's flip-floppy pace. And i agree with Txur'Itan; Taylor Kitsch could've done a better job at portraying John Carter. Not that he was absolutely terrible, but he was rather pale and ``hard-faced´´ in his acting. That being said, i think Lynn Collins and Samantha Morton did a pretty good job at portraying Dejah Thoris and Sola respectively. Nothing exeptional but still pretty good. Dejah Thoris and Sola were my favorite characters in the movie (and Woola, of course. He was funny  ;D.). I felt that Dejah was very badass and had a lot of girl-power in her, something that seems to contradict the books (I followed Kamean's link and a lot of the images on the site that included Dejah portrayed her being a stereotypical ``damsel in distress´´ and being saved by John Carter. Not that surprising considering the western world was a much more sexist place when the books were written  :-\.), although she was saved by John Carter a few times in the movie, too. I also thought Sola was adorable and i felt bad for her because she was so sweet and kind and warm but she had to go through so much pain because of her compassion. I think it would be interesting to see any eventual sequels of this movie.

Yeah  :). You really gotta feel bad for the poor girl because of all the harassment she got from her people, especially Sarkoja. That b**ch  >:(. She really got what she deserved in the end.

Have I already told you that the only thing that really bothers me in JC is the same as in Avatar: the aliens' voices? Especially the female's voices! Too sweet, too high... They're giant and wild creatures with lovely voices like Earth blondies...  ::)

I haven't thought about that at all. Now that you mention it, it would be interesting to see a movie where they have more stern (or however you want to describe it) voices. Like a warrior princess, but not so much princess, mostly just warrior. On the other hand, they could be dangerous creatures with sweet voices just to give a false sense of security... :) (I don't know, it's late, I should be asleep)

Ma Nyx: ``Dangerous creatures with sweet voices´´? You mean like sirens  ????

I don't know; Neytiri's voice can sound pretty harsh when she wants too  :-\. Like when she meets Jake for the first time and she's angry at him. But her voice can also sound incredibly soft and seductive and beautiful  :) <3! Ahh, Neytiri  :) <3...

And, yes; You should go to sleep, Ma Nyx lol  ;D.
