And i'd also like to share my thoughts regarding some of your statements of John Carter's resemblance to Avatar:

While i agree that John Carter and Avatar have quite a lot in common, and, seeing as how John Carter came out a while after Avatar, some people have therefore considered it a rip-off. However; If anything, Avatar ripped off John Carter. Well, not really John Carter itself but the Mars series of books it's based on. Cameron has even stated Burroughs' novel series as a big inspiration for Avatar. A couple of weeks ago, i found an article explaining this but i just don't have the time to find it right now. I promise that i'll link it here when i find it  :). However, it wouldn't surprise me if, like another person stated previously in this thread, John Carter is trying to ride on Avatar's success, as if the makers of the film were thinking ``Hey, if we do a film this way that is about this and looks like this, it'll probably be a big success. Just saying; It worked with Avatar.´´.

What do ma aynga think about this  ????

It's very difficult to create a competely new idea. EVERYTHING has a lot in common with something else! We have a saying about it; I don't know if there's an English equivalent but it says something like "there's nothing new underneath the Sun."

I'm not accusing it of being unoriginal per say, i'm just saying that i think it's possible that without Avatar's massive success, John Carter would probably never have been made  :-\. Note what another member wrote previously in this thread:

that looks incredibly like avatar. i think these people might be trying to jump on the pandora bandwagon a bit...trying to make money off people who go, expecting an avatar-esque experience. and the green people really remind me of the Na'vi.

And i've heard about that saying before. When you say that ``we have a saying´´, do you mean that it's Hungarian  ????

Yes.  :) (And if anybody knows an English saying that means something similar, please share it with me.)

Alright. Irayo for the info  :)! And i think the saying is exactly like you wrote it in English. In Swedish it'd be ``Det är inget nytt under solen.´´.

Sorry for the necropost  :-\, but i'd like to share some more of my thoughts on the similarities between John Carter and Avatar:

While i think John Carter and Avatar have quite a few things in common, i personally think John Carter has more in common with the ``new´´ Star Wars trilogy; IMO some of the non-humanoid animals in the movie are similar to some animals from Star Wars Episode I, II and III, the Tharks don't look so much like the Na'vi, as another member wrote previously in this thread, as they do the Kaminoans and the Xexto, both featured in the new Star Wars trilogy and the scene in John Carter where John Carter and Tars Tarkas are to be executed by wild beasts let loose very much reminds me of the Geonosis execution scene in Episode II.

That's what i think, at least. What about you guys  ????

Just remember that it was John Carter and all the beasts and creatures around him that were first, Star Wars, Avatar and similar came much, much later.

I wonder if George Lucas, like James Cameron, used Burroughs' Mars series as inspiration  :-\.

Kamean

In my opinion, all the great directors and writers, isn't inspired by one thing, and picked ideas from a variety of artworks.
For example, Tolkien, creating The Lord of the Rings, has been inspired by German Nibelung's Ring, Finnish Kalevala and British legends.

Clarke

Also, Old Norse. However, AFAIK, the point was always to explain the languages he'd invented.  ;D (Whereas Cameron has done it the other way around. :P)

It wasn't so much the shape of them that reminded me of the Na'vi, as the tribal look, and how much they tower over John. (Also, the CGI is cool. :P)

I'm aware that most directors do not use one single source but several. I'm just saying that i wouldn't be surprised if Lucas was inspired by the Mars series like Cameron was  :-\.

And by ``other way around´´ you mean that Tolkien created a world for his langauges whereas Cameron created a language to fit into his world  ???? 'Cus i've heard that Tolkien was a linguist by profession and put his own languages into the books.
