This film is somewhat unusual in its depiction of a Euro American woman that falls in love with a Native American man and crosses the cultural border into Native American culture and society. Most often in American films it is the western man that falls in love with a woman from another culture and crosses over into that culture (as in Avatar).

By the way, one can wonder how Avatar would have been like if Jake had been a woman and Neytiri a man.
