It is said that Avatar was inspired by several other movies, by books and by the situation of different indigenous groups in the world.

Some of the movies that inspired Avatar or have themes somewhat similar:

By the way, just imagine if Cameron would do a version of Nausica of the Valley of the Wind, using the same outstanding technology as in Avatar. That would be awesome.

Don't forget The Last Samurai ;)

Don't get me wrong, though; that's not a criticism at all.

A lot of people say that Avatar is highly derivative because of it's similarities to these other stories.  But all stories are derivative:  They draw from archetypes, and the commonalities of human experience.  Stories like Avatar will always be told because the idea that a man can so change that he comes to identify with the people he once saw as "Other" and choose them over what were once his own people is a fascinating one, and we will always be intrigued by what makes such a thing happen.

Yes, I agree, these kind of stories move us. Also the themes about the cultural meeting between our own western way of life and other cultures fascinate many, and also the theme of the threat of destruction to the environment and to indigenous life ways.

In a movie, it isn't too important that the story is good. The important thing is how it is told and JC has told the story perfectly in Avatar!

I just noticed this thread.  This is not a personal comment, so please try not to be offended.  But, I think you would have done well to search the threads before bringing this up again.

I wonder how many people are going to reiterate this tired and well discussed point?
