I saw it yesterday as a part of my new initiative: watching all the movies nominated for the Oscars. And boy was I disappointed. Without trying to be biased towards Avatar, I truly sat and watched the two hours unfold before me. At the end I realised that even though the movie was good in terms of some character and camera direction, it wasn't worthy of an Oscar. Why do I say that? Well without spoiling it up too much: it just doesn't have a new take on Iraq. I mean, why should a movie which depicts the same things I see and hear about on TV every day, be considered for the title of best movie? It shows the dying, the psychological scars, and just how much war sucks. Doesn't really paint the American soldiers as the brave rescuers or heroes that the media makes them to be - but I doubt anyone needed to be told that. And seriously, this is without a bit of cynicism and without getting into the political issues: why should a movie that is purely political (and is even filmed a bit like a documentary) be worthy of one of the world's most esteemed awards? There have been plenty of Gulf War and Iraq war flicks, and many of them have won something. Should this movie get one too? I mean is favoring war and political interests a worthy goal?

It has the same issues people have with Avatar: no name actors, CGI, and I've even heard that the army tactics and fatigues in the movie aren't entirely correct. Hmm, well I suppose nothing new on human hypocrisy there.

So please, if you've seen the movie, share your insights, and discuss why this is a worthy motion picture (versus the likes of Inglorious Basterds and other nominees).

I think the same actually... the movie had nothing and I can't understand that it's competing in the oscars against other good movies.

Perhaps it's just politics and personal "view", I think it's quite understood that Avatar won't have the same "impact" as Titanic had back then, but (!), I don't think anyone here really cares about it, not even JC, we all know that Avatar was great and the numbers are there to back it up.

Night Raider

There is a little more involved in this movie than action. Which is why it was nominated for oscar.
Is this right? I just write whatever in the signature box?

It's a war movie. It's auto oscar.

May be a little late for this but what the TC said about the uniforms in Avatar being correct: At least Avatar has the excuse of taking place about 130 years into the future.

I watched The Hurt Locker recently too!

I thought it was good, but hugely overrated... it was pretty far form reality too, it doesn't take an idiot to know that when one person puts themselves at risk they put their allies at risk, but some of the joys of movies are unreality right?

Anyway, to me it just seemed a bit like an average action film with a little bit of the war psychology in it. Make no mistake, I enjoyed it and thought it was pretty good, entertaining.

Then afterwards I was thinking about the incredible hype it received and then thought about Jarhead... I thought Jarhead was awesome, in my opinion a lot better than The Hurt Locker, and a lot more thought provoking. It got me thinking why didn't Jarhead earn so much hype and respect.

I suppose it's just the media to blame in the end though...

I saw this film was extremely disappointed, the main thing that struck me after watching it is that the oscars were just clearly a political move (Avatar being considered anti-American...)

Wow, so much hate/dislike.

Anyway, I loved the movie and happily put it in #2 for this year (tied with Star Trek) in my book. I put this movie on one night planning on the just watching it out of the corner of my eye while doing some stuff around the house. Well, that didn't happen, couldn't look away for 2 hours. I loved how suspenseful it was, many of the events we're un-predictable (aside from the fact that everything has a bomb in it :P) and I loved the scene with the sniper.

Anyway, I loved this movie, I thought it did a great job of a modern war movie without making a political statement. Full of action and suspense and well filmed and brilliantly acted. If Avatar couldn't win best picture then I'm happy this one did.

I thought it was really quite good as well, don't get me wrong. But I just didn't think it was as 'Oscar-worthy' as some would make it out to be.

IMO it's a good rentable for like a friend's night, so I suggest you see it if you wanna spend a few bucks and are not watching avatar for some unfathomable reason.

It's watchable but it's only average in an age of exceptional films

So far I have seen Hurt locker, precious, up in the air, the last station, an education, and Up. so far i believe that all these would have been a better choice for BP, especially Precious. I guess while i found Hurt Locker watchable, i did not find it innovative or special. Just my opinion though.

(i purposely left Avatar out)

That's how I felt about Precious. Accept for the watchable part. Or the part where it should be called a movie at all. Just whale-drama.

So please, if you've seen the movie, share your insights, and discuss why this is a worthy motion picture (versus the likes of Inglorious Basterds and other nominees).

1. The no name actors did better than I think the big name actors could do because the no-names know that they have to do this movie right, because it might be their last one if they don't.

2. I've heard that filming producers can't use the exact same fatigues as the army uses, some kind of copyright or something like that. At least in Avatar, the change in pattern can be attributed to the length of time in the future.

3. As far as Avatar is concerned, what tactics, its just a frontal assault. Hurt Locker, though, I guess was praised by soldiers for being accurate and portraying the scars of war without glorifying them.

Just my 2 cents.
