Just got back from seeing The Lovely Bones. Here are my thoughts.

Overall: a piece of crap

However, I do think that if the cut out the CG'd scenes, and
it would have been half-decent. In some scenes, I was on the edge of my seat, about to burst at the seams. Pretty much every scene with Stanley Tucci was like that. He was creepy, and I am most likely going to have many joyous dreams about rape and murder after this.

I need to go watch The Hangover and get this out of my system.

I don't know when I'm going to go to the movies again, due to Avatar, because I know that nothing will much it and I'll just get disappointed, I need a "free time" from the theather , altough movies back home I don't mind watching. Yestarday I watched Riddick 2 , which I like , but going to the theaters.... don't know when this will be, unless it's Avatar again!

All of the parts with Mr. Harvey were creepy enough as they were...

I went to see The Lovely Bones when it came out and after seeing it I understand the critical reviews in the press a bit.
Not that the movie is bad - it's actually quiet ok.
It's just that when you see the movie with the book in your head you will most likely have the feel some things ain't right. It's not that they changed things a lot or invested too much time into Mr. Harvey as some accused them of. It's more that they left too many important details away. So for example they left the affair between Abigail Salmon and Len Fenerman. Also the stories around Ruth, Ray's family and Susie's sister are dropped or cut down to just a few short scenes. And these have significance to the meaning of the book. And while Susie's heaven is realized quiet well in the optical department it is missing significant elements that change the feel of it. Here her heaven is a largely lonely place which it wasn't in the book (or at least not in that respect that there were no other people besides Holly). And this is with the whole film - it's missing little but significant elements.
Also they rearranged events so that they no longer follow the timeline of the book which in some part has significance.

I don't think it is impossible to make a movie straight of The Lovely Bones - it just can't be done in two hours without leaving too much significant content out.

If you like the book, there was a TV show that was in part inspired by it: Dead Like Me
- if you're in the US you can watch it for free on Hulu: http://www.hulu.com/dead-like-me

And where Peter Jackson and his team failed with The Lovely Bones, Brian Fuller succeeded by turning Dead Like Me into a quirky comedy and to make it a TV series that allowed for a deeper character development and enough time to let the significance of the story to sink in.
