Do our artists still write their own songs?

With the state of the pop music today, I'm probably right to say that: Who actually writes the songs of the artists? Do the artists attend sessions of yeses and nays to the propositions or do they take sheets of paper and pencils and they write and erase until they are satisfied?

According to Wikipedia, Wrecking ball was not written by Miley Cyrus, Steal my girl was written by 2 members of the band (they are 5), plus some other people and Umbrella was not written by Rihanna.

Of course, I am not talking about the singers that recover the songs or that sing popular songs as a hommage or because they are beginning.

Some may do. Particularly those who play an instrument (quoting the J'n'R DJ from GTA IV "music from the times, when musicians could actually play musical instruments" :) ). Although not necessarily with paper and pencils, etc. (except for the lyrics)

It concerned the lyrics, of course.

Yeah, but also to mention all the cover songs...
Example:
Original
The Riddle (Nik Kershaw) HD
Written: 1984

Modern Cover:
Gigi D' Agostino: The Riddle
From 2000

I like original more; second song is just "tuc tuc" version of the original :D
I'm not against cover versions, some are as good as original, some can be even better than original, but these two options are quite rare.

I don't see what could be wrong with covers (as long as the artists acknowledge it is one, of course). Sometimes, a cover might be nearly completely different. Compare:
Howlin' Wolf- Killing Floor
and
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Killing Floor (Live at Monterey Pop Festival 1967)
(start at 0:37)
or
Willie Dixon - I can't quit you, baby
and
Led Zeppelin-I Can't Quit You Babe Live with lyrics

Covers are totally ok and I like some covers because some of them are better than the original. :)
I just mentioned them, because a cover is usually a re-play of an original song. And that fit to the question Do our artists still write their own songs?, doesn't it?

What I was trying to say, was that making a cover might be like making a (nearly) whole new song.
