So... anyone else do anything in music?

All it takes is the right attitude, and I'm sure you're 4x width will become 1x width.  Besides, these days, hardly anyone really is the width of a Na'vi.

Personally, I just think it would be really awesome to have metal music, and you could say I have quite a nice death metal "growl."  And as much as I say that I like to play drums, I'm not the type of drummer to play metal: I like my jazz drums better.  And I could probably pick up bass if I needed to, but I would need to learn left handed, due to an incident 5 years ago that hinders my performance in my left hand.

But there is one thing that we would need to do: make ourselves appear larger (in height) on stage.  I mean, Na'vi are 10 feet tall, so we might want to experiment with that.  Which brings up a story that ties into this...

One of my previous private instructors got the chance to meet Green Day after one of their concerts.  In concert, they seem quite tall to a lot of the audience.  However, when my instructor met them, they cam about to his mid-chest (he was about 6'2").  So there are ways to do that.

That sounds cool...

Stilts...

I was thinking, I could dress up like the Tree of Souls, it'd look freaky on stage.

Yeah... I think it would just be better to be blue Na'vi.  But the Tree of Souls would be a great stage prop (maybe).  Maybe even (albeit a lot smaller) Hometree.

Stilts with guitars in hand are a bad idea.  Learn from your friends' experiences...

Overall, though, I think this (meaning, the whole Avatar/Na'vi fanbase) needs to evolve a lot more before any of us really can consider something along the lines of this.

... I just can visualize it now: a Na'vi screaming to the music, and the other band members wailing on the guitars... It just can't get out of my head. :D

I've been into music for, well, ever. Started singing with people when I was about 8 or 9. Last couple of years I've had singing lessons and I play the piano, I don't read sheet music. Gosh, I HATE sheet music. Now I'm a solo singer just doing random performances, which is good. I mainly work by myself. Compose my own stuff. I've been glad it's the holidays, I get so much done.

I've spent most of my life singing.  I was involved in one choral program or another from kindergarten through 12th grade, and I was the lead tenor in one of the best high school choirs in the state.  Unfortunately, the university I'm currently attending (Purdue University) doesn't have a very good choral program, so I haven't had an opportunity to perform in public in almost 2 years. :<   I've had several years of private voice lessons in which I studied both classical and modern music.  I also dabble in piano and DJing a bit, but not at the same level as voice.  I don't really prefer one genre over others, I just enjoy performing with other passionate musicians.

The Na'vi band sounds awesome!  It reminds me of KISS, but, well, with Na'vi!

I grew up from infancy watching VH1.  So, yeah, I've got rock embedded in my heart for forever.

Well, all I need to do is find those of talent and of willingness to paint themselves blue and look like, well, Na'vi. :P

Seriously, though, you have a car that you could make your way to Ball State @ Muncie?  Could get things started there.

I play a little guitar. Used to play it quite alot, but i've cut down on playing. Kind of lost my magic for it i guess. Im learning for music manager now, to become tour/band manager. Should be fun

I am a guitarist (3 to 4 years?) and I play piano also. I have been playing piano less than a year but I can play a pretty decent amount of stuff given time and the sheets. I would love to work with people making music so if you guys start a project definitely count me in.

Eyamsiyu

Just a question... for those who would truly love to get involved in a project like this, what kind of style of music would you guys like to put out there?

Me personally, I'm a son of Nu Metal, specifically P.O.D., so that would be my vote is our own kind of Nu Metal to go with, and maybe, after we find out a lot more about the Na'vi culture, include some of their "possible" cultural music style and instruments into ours.  At this point, the only song I can think of that might be remotely close to something that they might have is "Nobody's Listening" from LP.  And even that is a stretch.

Errrr, I am not a fan of metal :D No offense Lol just not my style. I would think some keys and percussion with some kind of stringed instrument (acoustic guitar? sitar?) and definitely some choir type vocal chanting would match the culture pretty well. I am also a singer BTW Lol and it would be cool to compose a song and then have everyone play a part on it.

Nu metal, at least the kind I listen to, is not "screamo," "blast-beats-at-4000-bpm" metal.  It actually incorporates "singing" and has some artistic musicality to it, rather than technical musicality.  In fact, I would go as far as to say that Nu metal is more of a fusion between heavy metal, hip-hop, and grunge (according to wikipedia).  And more or less, vocals tend to "rap" and sing instead of "scream" and sing.

To your idea, sounds a lot more like the culture, for sure.  But I'm not going to lie, I liked more of an idea of making a rock/metal band out of the concept.  Although, I don't think it would be a bad idea at all to have a variety of different genres on different songs.  A couple "Na'vi culture" songs, a couple rap songs, add some rock (of any sort), and maybe even some abstract works as well (and I really mean abstract.  Ex: Steve Reich's "Drumming").

Indeed. Lol several genre's is most definitely the best solution for composing songs. That way we can appeal to everyone's taste ;)

Aztique

I'd probably set up some Melodical Death Metal project. It's not for everyone's taste, but hey i love it so why not!

Eyamsiyu

Aztique, is that also known as "Symphonic Metal?"  If so, I like the stuff, but it depends on the group.  Within Temptation and UnSun sound good to me.

I just have to find people around Muncie, IN that have equipment.  I have a lot of ideas, but most of it are genres that evolved out of and include grunge and metal, and I honestly feel like that I'm the only one in Indiana who listens to all the stuff I do.

Ok, time to go do stuff.

Metal, especially melodic/symphonic death, is a curiously good idea because acutal lyric construction is very subjective in these types of songs. Sometimes, what is being sung does not even have to mean anything precisely, it's the way it's being sung that counts. This makes it very easy to be "loose" with lyric selection.

I agree it's important to preserve that traditional native cultural sound, I think it's worth the creative attempt to touch on other genres like metal.

Nope, symphonic metal is very different. LIke you say, those bands are symphonic, but MDM is heavier, less classical instruments, its just like Death metal, heavy and fast sometimes, with melodical leads in it. Some great examples are Amon Amarth and Arch Enemy, this song is one of my favorites

I do, in fact, have a car for getting to Ball State!  I will actually be down there tonight and a good chunk of tomorrow.  I have some friends who I visit there every now and then.  Anyways, if you wanted to grab some coffee or something on New Year's Day (zìsìtyä sngä'ikrryä trr) and talk about Na'vi/music/etc., let me know and we'll figure out some sort of plan.

I'm going to try to create a few Na'vi tribal songs, as soon as I get the proper equipment for doing so.  I'll post the work in progress once I've managed to get it started, which may be a little while (but hopefully not too long!).

I arrange and perform video game music on piano :)

Cave Story medley

Kingdom Hearts Piano Medley

I also compose a little bit. Currently learning clarinet, flute, and ocarina... wind instrument are strange.

awesome :D
lol I play the piano. and I play the guitar. But don't take that seriously. I only play guitar for my self satisfaction. I'm no expert. I'm not even an intermediate. I just play simple chords to accompany me singing. I think I can sing better than playing guitar.
My sis is the best tho. at the piano. she can hear a pop song and play it on the piano. ;D --
