Numeyu, that's great to hear!  Actually, though, I won't be up there now, but give it two weeks, and I will be.

The only good stringed instrument I can play on an excellent level are nerves of other people.

J/k. Been DJing here and there since 2000....
Is this right? I just write whatever in the signature box?

"DJ music" or "pop music" ain't really music. Really speed metal is more music-like but real metal is power not only speed. Greatest music is psychodelic rock, acid rock, 60's rock, blues, 50's or 60's R'n'B are the best music types. Just listen to:
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)(10 minutes version) - Acid Rock
The Doors                        - Break on through (to the other side)                 - Rock
Gypsy Sun and Rainbows    - Red House (Woodstock version)                        - R'n'B
Band of Gypsys                 - Machine Gun (20 minutes version)                     - Blues/R'n'B
B.B.King                           - The Thrill is Gone                                           - Blues
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Spanish Castle Magic                                      - Rock
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze (a.k.a. the 60's theme)                   - Psychodelic Rock
John Lee Hooker                - Hobo Blues                                                    - Blues
Bob Dylan                         - Thunder on the Mountain                                 - Country/Rock
Listen to all of these and say what's better, "DJ",pop (let's just say) things or long (5 mins+) and great Rock, Blues (let's just say) masterpieces?

Ps.: I'm (electric) guitar player (since I don't remember when).

Mr.X

I play guitar for something, like, six years, and I also attend to second grade music school, where I learn playing alto saxophone. I alos compose a little, you can find examples here : http://mrx89.newgrounds.com/ (shamless self promotion  ::) )
As for a learnnavi.org music collab, I thought maybe of doing something like they did with YouTube Symphonic Orchestra? I mean, in that one: "The Internet Symphony" Global Mash Up

Dude, that would be epic on epic proportions!  Too bad I don't own my own marimba... :(

I've played piano for fourteen years, guitar and trombone for half that, and some assorted wind instruments (all badly). I do love to write music, and writing music with Na'vi lyrics would basically be the greatest thing ever, though that's a long way off.

Do you have a composition of some sort yet, Kayrìlien?  With or without Na'vi lyrics, music is, in my personal opinion, still the most important aspect of a song/composition/chart.

And one more question: if we write these songs, what format are we going to follow?  The standard V-C-V-C-Bridge-C, or what I call "free verse?"  You know, when there is no defined verse or chorus (such as what you hear from bands such as Underoath and blessthefall).

I haven't tried writing anything yet, mostly because A: I'm still quite a beginner with the language, and B: I want to see the movie/hear the soundtrack a few more times to get a better idea of how Horner chose to portray the Na'vi. You have to bear in mind that Horner is a classically trained (read: Western European art music) composer, working within the confines of almost a thousand years of musical tradition. The Na'vi would most definitely have their own musical systems, such as tuning or modal organization, and they would not likely match anything on Earth just as, say, music from Northern Thailand is not the same as music from Argentina.

If there is any information about Na'vi music in the Survival Guide or other printed materials, I am ignorant to it, as I have not read it (yet).

Basically, I plan on first being able to speak the language more fluidly than the fifty-odd words that I can remember (I've only been doing this since Sunday) and make sure that I know the ins and outs of pronunciation and syllabic emphasis before I attempt to ruin the beauty of the language with my singing voice.  ;D

I didn't really answer your second question question directly, ma Autatuk'Ekong. It would also require more research on my part ($14.00 + popcorn + Coke kind of research) to find out more, as I didn't pay very much attention to the music when I saw the film.

Given a few weeks and a few more trips to the theater, I might feel ready to move forward with something. Until then, Eywa ngahu.

Honestly, here's my take on what Na'vi music probably is: skin-head drums, flutes ("Blue-Flute" clan) and singing/chanting.  That's about it.  I don't think they would have the knowledge (yet) to create anything more.  And that's why the music written by Horner had a tribal sound to it.

In addition, I was never intending that it would just be classical.  And personally, I would want to take a more "commercial" route to the music.  Though I encourage classical, since it is the roots of the music we have today, and it's also the only type of music that we have from Avatar (not counting "I See You" by Lewis, which is 90s power ballad-ish stuff).

I think you might underestimate them a little  ;) There are a lot more of instruments theat they could invent. For example, melodic percussion instruments- similar to marimba, or xylophone. Maybe also a string instruments, as they originated from bow (at least on Earth  :) )- they had a possibility to build simple harps, maybe even instruments similar to our violins. Not to forget wind instruments, which could be similar to didgeridoos, horns (made of bones), and woodwinds similar to oboes or clarinets.

It's not that I underestimate them: I just don't have any evidence that the instruments you listed exist (at least, not yet).

I listed those three because they were the only three that could somehow be confirmed that they have.

And Mr.X, you are completely correct: they have the ability and the materials to pursue making those instruments.  But since I have not yet seen evidence that anything besides my three exist, I myself can only leave it at that.

And if they haven't actually made them yet, they will: Na'vi are smart.

EDIT: They have flutes, but after reading a portion out of the Activist Survival Guide, even that has to be taken out of the picture: there is only one, only the clan leader plays it, and it is only on VERY special occasions.

Been playing guitar (acoustic and electric) on and off for the past 20 years.  Also have been doing tribal drumming (djembe) for nearly 7 years.

Tsäroltxe te Eyrutì Tantse'itan

I've been playing violin for the last 6 years.

We could have Na'vi Vivaldi. lol

Or translate Beethoven's Ninth into Na'vi.  8)

Violin, guitar drummer, bass is what I've seen here...

Remake of "Baba O'Riley" in Na'vi?

Kaltxi frapo !

I don't play any instruments anymore, except a little of the didgeridoo.  (It's been a long time since 8th grade band) A friend of mine, however (whose just seen Avatar for the 7th or 8th time) plays didgeridoo, huaca and a really lovely instrument called the hang drum... which if you've never heard is worth a listen (becapellargo hang)

He is totally in love with the Na'vi language and the world of Pandora, and he's written some music for the hang drum inspired by the movie.  While playing one piece he calls Sahalu, he is convinced he's flying on an ikran.

He's looking for some haikus or short poems/ chants written in Na'vi that he could sing along with some hang drum music.  Something inspired by life on Pandora, of the connection between all living things, or maybe the human experience of the Na'vi.

Does anyone have, or want to write a poem/haiku/chant in Na'vi to be made into music?

Feel free to respond to this message or PM me!

O_O HANG DRUMS!!! Aren't those things like, $3000 each?

And they are absolutely amazing: a perfect neo-hippie instrument.
