Top favorite: Randy Rhodes. (Ozzy Osbourne, before the plane crash) Perfect fusion of classical training and a passion for metal.
Next: Carlos Santana.  Musicality on a guitar at it's best.
Last: Nick Hipa. (As I Lay Dying).  Though some don't find metal-core to be really appealing (and maybe not musical), I have high respect for metal instrumentalists.  The amount of endurance and precision for playing what they do is appalling.  And Nick Hipa proves it.

I know this is listed as "guitar," but you've got to have some favorite bassists as well.  Mine: "Flea," the bassist for RHCP.

BTW, I like creed, but calling out Mark Tremonti as a favorite guitarist... I ask your basis on why you do.

For me, Slash is now the best living guitarrist, he is also my idol, because I also play the guitar. Unfortunately I am not as good as Slash  , but my aim for future is to play as good as he does!
(I also like Kurt Cobain and Jimmy Hendrix)
