I'm wondering about Na'vi social customs a bit myself.

It seemed that, when Jake went to shake hands with the leader, the tribe reacted very badly. I wonder-- was it just because he was an invader, or did they see the attempt to make physical contact an afront, or disrespectful, or even an attack?

I was also thinking about Jake showing up as Toruk Makto. Tsu'tey was the leader of the tribe, technically, but the look on his face seemed ot be that Jake could sieze power if he wanted to-- I mean, hell... Toruk Makto. It's not like Tsu'tey can really do much about it. But Jake makes it clear in front of everyone that he's going to respect Tsu'tey's position and not challenge him, which makes things go much easier.

Now, on something else, I'm really wondering-- people make a tsahaylu bond with their animals to ride them, and they make a tsahaylu bond with their mates for... you know... during snusnu... ( :D). Is it out of bounds to think that people would make tsahaylu bonds (without snusnu) with their parents, siblings, bestest friends, etc? I mean, a mother with her new baby not soothing the infant with a tsahaylu bond? Good enough to stick in horses but not to say "happy mother's day?"

It seems that tsahaylu would be something very common among people who share close bonds by reason of family or comraderie.

So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

well, with the bond to family, i presume the children would have a natural bond to their parents perhaps?

Much like how their characteristics stem from their parents maybe a natural bond as well that doesn't need tsahylu physically

very good question

and with Jake shaking hands i think it was more so the physical afrontation of touching the clan leader when Jake was not considered to be one of them.

I also get this theory considering he is unarmed with guards all around him who would think much the same as tsu'tey in that they could kill him relatively easily...which they would

I'm just wondering. After seeing the movie, I saw that they had their hair had a Tsaheylu connection, but were their tails having too?
Or don't they have a bond connection in their hair? (Thought I saw it at the part were they were.. you know.. admitting their love to Eywa)

Doesn't the bond connect minds together? That would have to be the most private and personal thing ever.

Unless, of course, you are a horse and can be ridden by anyone.

With shaking the leader's hand, I think any sudden movement towards their leader would have gotten a negative reaction. They don't trust him and don't know if he meant it as a kind gesture or as an attack. Plus there may be something in their culture where they don't like tawtute touching their leader. They probably see them as dirty.

As for Toruk Makto being above a clan leader I believe it's true. A clan leader just looks over his clan, while Toruk Makto has the power to unite all of the clans together. Still Jake was very smart with making it clear that Tsu'Tey was still the leader. When a foreign diplomat of a powerful nation visits the country of one with less the more powerful one should still treat the other with utmost respect. I think the same applies here in Jake's mind. I think it's a little surprising for Tsu'Tey who seems in shock whenever Jake asks for his permission.

As for tsahaylu and sex, I don't think it's nearly as creepy as everyone is making it out to be. It's clear that they have at least similar human naughty bits, or else Cameron wouldn't have had to have it covered all the time. So it's safe to assume that they do the horizontal fun time in a way similar to us. They bond during it because it will bring them all the closer as it is a bonding of the soul and mind. We humans always talk about becoming one while making love, for the Na'vi they literally do it.

They become one with the animals they are riding as well, but they aren't doing the physical act of sex by any means.

They would probably find it creepy to bond with your family or friends as it must be a very intimate practice among the Na'vi. It is one thing to bond to a pa'li and Ikran, where it is a matter of practicality and with them you don't have to worry about them hearing your every hope and fear ect.

I read somewhere that they do it with their tails... if I find the link again, I'll post it here.

That would be...weird...

Especially since the lash around their tails all the time. If it was true wouldn't they be...sensitive?

And why would they feel the need to cover up their front bits to keep the movie PG-13? There has to be some fun bits there or something!

I dunno...those are pretty skimpy loincloths.

I dunno, either they use their tails, or everybody is an idiot and is calling their queue a tail.

Tìng Eywatikìte'e

They would still cover it.

Plus in an interview the actors were talking about that scene and how they had to be careful of their movements to keep it PG-13, which suggests there was...thrusting...going on. You don't do that with tails.

Yeah, I suppose you're right....

Well at this point it's still just speculation. We're all just assuming with things like this.

They are. I know exactly what article our other tsmukan was talking about. They used the word "tail" for the Queue, even though it's the synapses that are hidden in their braids... skxawng fmawnyu!

They don't make love with their tail they are humanoid like us male Na'vi have the same parts Male Tawtute have same with female Na'vi and Tawtute.

The Queue connects them through body, mind and spirit while making Tsahaylu and while making love. Their way of reproduction is like Tawtute and other mammal's on earth.

I thought Tsahäylu gave 'em more pleasure during snusnu..  :D

it does it just makes the process even more beautiful and erotic.

Yes, the bond makes them "one person" in a sense, like what we humans are trying to do. They must be completely open with themselves and be willing to share themselves completely. Very beautiful.

Let me throw this question out though:
If they do make tsaheylu while *ahem* mating - and tsaheylu literally links their brains together, why did Netyeri not see or sense what Jake had been sent to do?

I'm not picking fault here, I'm really looking for someone to give me a logical explanation.

It's only what they are thinking at the moment that gets passed along ^_^ And no worries, no one is angry at you.

Well I doubt they see every memory they've ever had. They probably just hear what they are thinking at the moment and can communicate feelings with out words. I doubt they're downloading each other's minds. That would be overwhelming. Though after they've been mated for a while I'm sure they learn more and more about each other each time they do it. So it's a long term process whether then a one time deal.
