Interesting enough now that t comes to speech...
I'm also right handed and use that hand for the pull... Might be funny to try in reverse. If the weather get's better I might give it a try (shooting at temp somewhere around freezing point is NO fun).

"You don't dream in cryo" they say. Good! Imagine a 6-year-nightmare!

Just thought i would post this up, this is a thread discussing archery technique in Avatar and whether it would work.

Some interesting information, though it was a bit difficult to wade through. It still didn't sound like someone made a serious attempt at recreating their form of archery.

I agree with you there. I posted it because there were two people on the thread who were actually talking mechanics and construction pretty consistently and the one seemed reasonably knowledgeable. I figured it couldn't hurt ;)

Tìng Eywatikìte'e

Oh yes, it was quite helpful. We should keep an eye on it, in case they do a serious test on it.

alright. Ive been told twice to peek at this thread lol.
Ive not even read any of it though I noted to title. (will get on that)

if anyone has any questions. Ill be glad to help.
please note that my english is not so good.

Heh, sorry to have harassed you over here.

Basically our big question is if the Na'vi way of archery is even possible. We have some people saying it is and others saying it isn't. What's your opinion?

My thoughts exactly

Theiran

well having seen the movie about 6 times now  (woot lol.)
As far as their form goes  *stance. draw back.. positioning.etc* It looks good for the film. Im sure.. some of those shots were  *helped* you could say. camera angels have a big role in this film. obviously.  which make some of those moves look impossible.
though I would have to say. its not good for the bow to jump off that tree branch and land on those large leaves to get to the ground. that would be a lot of tension put on the string in the opposite direction it is generally supposed to go.

Yes I would say it is possible.
be more specific though if you can.. cause you based your question on the movie as a whole.. what scenes are you thinking are fake.. or not possible.

Well we've recently looked at this site, which is meant for archery enthusiasts.

It had a lot of technical talk so I didn't understand all of it, but they seemed to believe that the hand position with you left hand would make it impossible, or at least very difficult.

The more I look at the thread the more I think that they are being negative because they don't particularly like the movie. I can't think of any reason why an australian archery forum would not like avatar (/sarcasm) :p

Tìng Eywatikìte'e

Heh, well they like it in New Zealand and that's the only country that counts down there  ;D

they are also talking about that twisted wrist.
and the position of the sight window.

if you want to break it down that far.. (please note. as I read through that thread... I saw a lot of high ended egos. big men saying look at me. I picked out a flaw.)

in all reality... you would have to break down a Na'vi bow and compare it to one humans we use.  <--really weird to say lol
there would be some differences.

aside from the sight positioning.. which I will have to check into that.
you are simply turning your wrist. which does work. (I just tried it with my bow. and yes I have a bow for left handed shooting and one for right handed.) alot of the Na'vi bows have added decor.. from what I see different sight measure points

and look at it this way.... not to compare a bow to a guitar.. but its like learning to play the guitar weather the neck be to your left or right... you will need lots of practice and fine tuning of how your muscles/joints react to that.

Thank you. I sensed a lot of big egos on that site as well and wanted to hear something from someone a bit more level headed. Irayo ma tsmuké

2022 update: Working on the new astrology book. "How to read tarot" books are on Amazon, if you are into that sort of thing.
Okay, so the old podcast is here: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/radioavatar It was goofy fun that ended too soon, but we had creative people. I hope we can get a new gang together (interested? PM me, let's make some magic!)
(Very old, outdated) Na'vi FUN activity book is here: But what are you doing? Let me know! :)

Irayo for your information and help.  :)

I've tried the twisted wrist method and it seems to work just fine. Though it took me a while to get used to it. Once i adjusted accordingly, my shooting wasn't much different. I've also tried swapping shooting hands, and after a period of adjustment, things worked ok. I even had another friend try it out and he adjusted after awhile as well. In the end, the method works ok for shorter duration shotting sessions. But i would actually prefer the un-twisted wrist for longer shooting sessions.
See that shadow? It's the last one you're gonna see.

This thread is making me want to try this hobby. Until now it was something in which I had NO interest...

It's amazing what Avatar has made us get into. I may just need to take a weekend off and go camping someplace where I could play properly.
