Does anyone know anything about making bows? Aren't they laminated wood? That would be tough to produce. Tough, but nothing is impossible.
Yes, and not necessarily. Bowmaking as an extensive topic that can not hoped to be fully covered here, so I recommend doing some reading on the topic if you're interested. The Traditional Bowyers Bible series and Primitive Archer are good sources.

The type of material and construction used varies as widely as there are woods and places in the world to find it - and in some where you can't. Self-bows of wood are generally the simplest, though bundle-bows are about as primitive as you can go. From there you can get into various laminates, adding material to the back, belly, or both sides of the bow to enhance performance (stretchy materials, such as sinew, to the back, compressible materials, such as horn, to the belly). These eventually lead to composite bows, which can become very elaborate to manufacture.

Great sources! Irayo. I have a copy of "The Bent Stick" that I like. Written by a longtime bowyer. Real hands on "This is how you do it, son." book. Not a lot on history or anything fancy, but solid advice (as long as you have access to split logs--or don't mind buying one ready to shape). I will definitely check out those books though. Thank you thank you.
2022 update: Working on the new astrology book. "How to read tarot" books are on Amazon, if you are into that sort of thing.
Okay, so the old podcast is here: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/radioavatar It was goofy fun that ended too soon, but we had creative people. I hope we can get a new gang together (interested? PM me, let's make some magic!)
(Very old, outdated) Na'vi FUN activity book is here: But what are you doing? Let me know! :)

A few things to note as i read this topic.

Dominant hand: the na'vi are another race, their dominant hand could be their left much like the right is with most humans.

Note on large arrow size + bow overdraw:  The bows are made out od local plant material (i doubt wood since the trees are connected to eywa, unless of course they find them on the ground)  We don't know the properties of this wood and it is quite possible it is strong yet light, We also don't know what would be considered overdraw due to the wood's properties.

I also mentioned in the metalurgy topic that it is very possible the arrowheads are made of animal bone.  If you remember Jake's orientation, the na'vi bone structure is fused with a natural occuring carbon fiber, this would imply all animals in the region would have the same effect.  the heads made from that bone would be rather ideal.

Yanari

I belive that at least adult hunters' bows are made of wood, since Neytiri told Jake: "You can make your bow from wood of the Home Tree."

good point, either way we don't know the exact properties of the wood used.

In the words of Tr. Augustine, I need to get some samples.

Here's to not knowing exactly what you're saying and having fun with it.

Just thought I'd throw in my advice:

I actually like this technique. It allows me to get a better sight on my arrow (which may help explain why the Na'vi are so dang accurate) and it more comfortable. That's just me though.

Im a big time archery hunter my main type of bow is the longbow similar to the Na'vi bow. from some of the posts i have read the style of twisting the wrist is actually a surprise to me i have never seen that style before but as to the Na'vi overdrawing the bow that could be for many reasons, one could be it is the way they are taught, two it could be for more penetration of the target to ensure a kill, or they overdraw the bow fo accuracy. but yes the wrist twist i am going to the range tommorow and give it a try i will report back on it if it has any diffrence than my normal bow draw technique.

As will I. We'll compare differences.

As with any sport, consider doing at least a little bit of stretching and flexing to loosen up before you start. I've been finding that i get sore after my archery sessions, more so since using the twisted wrist. It's probably just me. I've begun a small stretching regiment before i shoot, and found i'm not nearly as sore anymore.

I find the technique interesting, and now that i use it, going back to the "old" way seems weird. My acquaintances at the range have all asked me what's up with the new stance. And believe it or not, some of them are giving the twisted wrist method a try.

See that shadow? It's the last one you're gonna see.

She wouldn't be the only one happy to see some real world footage.
Here it's too cold/windy/snowy to set up the equipment.

Then I guess I'm filming it as well :P Question is where should I go to do it...

ihnamere

ohh ohh do it on Pandora :D

(or just outside on a open field)

Mako

Well I live in the suburbs, so there isn't much room. I could sneak up to my high school's football field and try :P Or I'll just do it from across my road down into my backyard. I don't know. We'll see.

ihnamere

try aiming through your window, aim for the neighbours, if you hit em it works, if not, try again  ;D

Mako

:D I could go for accuracy and Omatikaya'itan could go for range.

wait a second.... the actors never wore any of that stuff!

(i guess they used some 3-d mapping technology to digitize the props, or something... making something in real life and then using a 3d scanner tends to be eaiser than creating the entire thing from scratch in cyberspace.)
