Totally! :D

I've also asked myself the question at some point, and well, since the Na'vi give so much importance to the respect of all beings and of community, I've came to the conclusion that if ever there were homosexual people, The People would surely accept them.
As if there are homosexual Na'vis or not, I really don't have any idea. But what I know, is that it wouldn't bother me at all. ˆˆ

Like, if you got to watch?   ;)

I have to go with orientation as a (mostly) genetic deal.  I'm sure you can 'condition' to a certain degree to maybe train them to see either gender as equal chance.  I think, if one were deserted on a island from a young age, with no outside influence (TV, other people telling you what's 'right') it could very well be possible.

But seeing how it's prevalent in other animals, it seems to me to be a genetic mismatch in the hippocampus- Since, I've noticed, when it comes to twins, where one may be gay or bi, 99% the time, the other twin (identical) is hetero, and what I've learned from my A&P class, in twins, with a mental condition/defect/ect  only one will have it, and the other usually won't.

Some studies have concluded it has more to do what conditions an organism undergoes in-utero -- hormones and other factors affecting mothers and offspring have been speculated to play a large role in determining sexual orientation in men (less studies on women :( ) This is the case when a woman has had successive sons the younger sons, as she builds up a mechanism that attacks androgen (male hormone) in her body, are more likely to be gay.

Just an FYI as many people believe its a genetic issue, and while it is NOT necessarily linked to genetics, it is something that occurs in nature, and not something one is able to "choose". I'll post a link to the study when I find it again.  :)

I'm not saying people are able to freely choose who they get turned on by, but I do think, there is some outside factor that may make a person more open-minded about trying- I suppose, that more or less would be geared toward being bisexual, rather than one way or the other.

I think Truro's information really just convinced me of the whole argument of whether they have a choice or not... and I now say not.

Truro, do you have a link to the article where you read this?

I actually saw a film in an anatomy and physiology class about this subject. Here is an article from CNN regarding it, but it was not my primary means of information.  - http://articles.cnn.com/2000-03-29/health/gay.fingers_1_androgen-sexual-orientation-heterosexual-women?_s=PM:HEALTH

EDIT: found a different, more in-depth article (and better I think): http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002340883_gayscience19m.html

QuoteRoselli and his colleagues at OSU are using the gay rams to test what is called the neurohormonal theory of sexual development: that hormones from a developing fetus fix its sexual identity by orchestrating brain organization. Too much or too little of these powerful chemicals, or shifts in timing, may lead to homosexuality, the theory predicts

@ Kur'rända: I know you weren't trying to say that - I am sorry if it came across that way. Its just that the genetic argument tends to break down considering gay parents either often don't have children or have straight children, and then people claim that its not true because of this. I think its more of a spectrum than actually one way or the other (from my own experience). Do you have an article or anything pertaining to it? I like to have as much information on my side as possible!

All life has Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA), or Ribonucleic Acid (RNA). Helix strands on Earth are Carbon Based, Its possible that Extraterrestrial Life is Silicon Based, non the less Genetics have there Dis-functions and Damage. Which Causes Homosexuality and or others. If the Na'vi has genetics (of coarse they do) there is that chance that the molecule is damaged or malfunctioning and causing it.

The confusion with this came with Pandorapedia stupidly posting that the Na'vi use "NVTranscriptase" instead of DNA ...which makes no sense, and probably shouldn't be taken as canon since Jake says in the movie its a mix of Human DNA and "DNA of the natives". Since the Na'vi have bones reinforced with "naturally occuring carbon fibers" I'd place my bets on them having DNA. (I actually started a thread on this a while back because Im writing a fanfic about Grace and I wanted to be specific regarding her early research).

As stated above, actual genes are believed to have less to do with homosexuality than the conditions experienced by organisms while they are still unborn. Random genetic mutations, attacking the same gene as often as homosexuality exists, seems unlikely to me, but I have yet to complete a genetics course, so you may very well be right.

Human No More

Well, -ase indicates an enzyme, I took that as being part of the method of how human features were encoded into the Na'vi genetic profile to create avatars.
Na'vi do seem to be most likely carbon based still.

I'd guess that while there may be some Na'vi who are, I doubt it's as common as in humans both due to the simple scale of human population, and due to less exposure to elements that may have a psychological effect and cause it. Either way, the Na'vi seem understanding and accepting of individuals enough not to have a problem with it :)

You whats funny about NVTranscriptase. Transcriptase is an enzyme that copies DNA to RNA. you know the na'vi we're so close to the theory's of life, and then they pull something like this. If transcriptase is carrying the genetics of the na'vi then there would be no way to create the Hum'vi hybrid.  :-\

Just a thought...

From the beginning of the dark ages to the time around the industrial revolution, homosexuality and the other alternative sexualities where considered as sin in most of the western world.

Due to the massive increase of awareness and scientific approaches to thing during the era of enlightment and the industrial revolution, alternative sexualities then became classified as a mental illness.

Even thought i don't agree with these views of alternative sexuality, i must still confess that, in some way, i consider homo- and bisexuality as a ``syndrome´´, but that doesn't mean that i hate gay people. I think that something has gone biologically wrong with gay people, yes. But i also think that you can live in harmony with your possible ``deformation´´ without it causing direct harm to oneself.

Bottom line: I consider homo- and bisexuality technically as a defect, but i don't think that it needs treatment, just like have two different-colored eyes.

When it comes to this topic, I refuse to really try and figure out "why" and just accept it.  We have lived with people that are heterosexual and homosexual for ages, and it hasn't caused an issue.

Besides, the honest truth is that some of the funniest people and the most chill people to be around are homosexual.  Some of my friends are as such, so why try and change that?

Yes, homosexuality is a mental disease, but also a genetic Deformation  ???

*ahem* According to the following organizations, Homosexuality is not a mental disorder and should not be treated as one.

Now, here begs the question: would all that sciency stuff (not feeling very bright today) also apply to the Na'vi (since, after all, this topic IS about the sexual orientations of the Na'vi)?
