Na'vi couples...hetro, homo etc/.
« on: August 22, 2010, 08:18:32 am »
i was on DeviantART and looking at Na'vi pics and i see one with two male na'vi together (just hugging and looking happy).  it got me wondering, are the Na'vi against two male na'vi or two female na'vi being together like a lot of tawtute do? i mean it won't create young, like it would with a male and female, but it's still love.  i think the na'vi would understand that more...idk...

what do my fellow 'Rrta na'vi think?  ???

Interesting stuff, actually ;D I think it's possible that Na'vi don't even have such "gay genes" that determine sexual preferences for human... But even if it does take place, I think it would be very complicated issue for their culture... ???

I would be surprised if it wasn't even encountered in some way.  I would bet that, based on their society, such things would be kept quiet or secret.

This is interesting, though...

I wouldn't think they would be kept secret so much as they just wouldn't be talked about specifically because why is it anyone's business who Eywa made for someone else? :D

Look at most hunter-gatherer societies, especially North American native cultures.  They are quite comfortable with "third gendered people" and even in some cases consider them sacred.  I don't see why the Na'vi would be any different.

Yeah, in that case they would ask Eywa for a sign or something...

It's an interesting question. While I would certainly like to think that they are an accepting culture and wouldn't discriminate that difference, I think it is possible they might. I'm only basing this off of the fact they seem to plan the 'mates', although I don't know how early on they do this. That might matter a lot. If a Na'vi only showed interest in the opposite sex before their future mate was planned, then it's possible it would be more acceptable.

It's also true it could be completely different. The Na'vi could easily be a culture that would accept anyone how they are, no matter what their sexual orientation is. The reason this would be more likely is that (to me) it seems like they aren't very critical of their fellow Na'vi. What am I basing this off of? Nothing. It's just what it feels like to me.

And because it's such an issue in our world, I don't know if we'll ever find out from JC. Anyone know what his stand on gay rights is? I think if he does give us the answer it would be in his novel. But even then, it's possible he'll leave that issue alone.

I thought this is only for clan leader and Tsahìk, because it's very important to find "right" people for such important "positions" in the clan.

I didn't think it was genetic... I thought it was a complex mixture of many aspects that caused a person to become gay.

It is an interesting question, however, whether gay people would even exist on Pandora. And if they did, what the Na'vi would think of them - we know very little about their attitudes to such things, other than that they are monogamous. I assume, though, that they are reasonably accepting, as they must have originally accepted the sawtute in order for Grace to even be able to get close to setting up her school, so perhaps they wouldn't be that bothered.

Well, sure, but genes are very important here. It's all about psychology vs biology. Some could "think" that they are gay, even whithout "genes"... Anyway, I still think that for Na'vi it would be determined by some ritual or signs from Eywa etc...

As with almost all 'fundamental' traits like this, there're going to be heavy elements of both nature (I don't know about any genetic studies, but their is a study that shows that IIRC high levels of testosterone (which might go against many people's preconceptions about gay men being less manly) are correlated with a high ratio between the third and fourth digits of the hand (starting from the thumb) which, in turn, is correlated with homosexuality) and nurture involved.

Anyway, as far as the na'vi view goes, Neytiri is very clear that Jake can choose "a woman", not a mate, but a woman. That would imply to me that even if homosexuality isn't frowned upon, it certainly is not openly acknowledged in polite circles. Of course, it's quite possible that Neytiri was taking the way Jake had flirted with her earlier as a sign of his heterosexuality.

First of all, please forgive any gross mistake I could write, english is not my mother language, so...

I see no reason why Na'vi wouldn't accept such unions.
They take their partner before Eywa, not before the other members of the Clan.
By the way, the Na'vi union being a spiritual one, I think it would be more "open" to homosexual relation.

To me, it's not a case of whether or not they would care (but for that, I would probably go for them not caring). It's a case of whether or not gay people would even exist - the environment on Earth that causes people to be gay, whatever that may be (partially genetic, partially how they are brought up from a very early age) may not even exist on Pandora.

I guess that if they do have gay people, I agree with Amaya, why would it be anyone's business? And since they seem to be more about the love, there's nothing saying that love has to be between two people of opposite sex. Also, if it does occur, maybe it's rare and therefore not something that's brought up much. Maybe that's also why Neytiri assumed Jake would want a woman.

And as for whether it happens, I think chances are that it does. Humans aren't the only ones with gay couples.

On earth in many Native American tribes, homosexuality is looked up as a natural part of life. In fact in some tribes in history it was allowed that a boy could chose to practice the traditionally female arts such as food gathering instead of hunting. Sometimes called berdache or "man-woman" a man who chose this path would also often dress in women's garb and robes. A heterosexual man may take him as a second "wife". It is considered part of the Great Maker's plan..the duality of human spirits. Many often became shaman and spiritualists given they walked in two worlds. (See the book called The Zuni Man Woman) Why should the na'vi be any less accepting of Eywa's creations?

All I say is that they are awesome, whether they are "in the closet" or not.

I'm not entirely sure that logic holds ma Nyx. There's no reason why someone's sexuality would be anyone else's business here mì 'rrta but alas, some people wish to make it theirs. I'd like to think the na'vi were open minded about it, but there's nowhere enough evidence to conclude either way.
