Well I'm sure he can tell if it was his Toruk or not. They have individual markings, plus I still think they're able to sense each other in some way...

Most likely. You make some good points.

Tìng Eywatikìte'e

If the fighting is a one time thing before bonding it could lead to some awkward moments though. Imagine that they can only really recognize each other up close. If Toruk was just flying along looking for some yummy Ikran to munch on and see Jake he'll go into a dive, only to realize who he is mid dive. He suddenly jerks up and is all "Why howdy there, I was just eager to see you and thought I drop down. Not trying to eat you, nope, not at all!" *Toruk's version of casual whistle*

Now that would be funny to see and hear. I didn't think Toruk whistle his own way, probably mentally.

Tìng Eywatikìte'e

I just like the idea of a big mighty beast like Toruk having an awkward moment.

You see it with tigers and all cats! They'll be walking along and trip or something and then totally glance around before being all smooth and totally "I meant to do that, oh yeah."

Jakes banshee chased him down--in the middle of an ash-filled forest, where the sky was filled with acrid odors of burning animals and plants. Palulukan (Thanator) can apparently smell prey at a range of 13 miles (I would assume by smell).I would hazard a guess that Toruk can smell Jake in a snowstorm :)

But he may get jealous and eat his banshee. Jake may have to get a pet tiger to guard his banshee.

Aww, poor little Ikran. I'm guessing Jake wouldn't be happy about that >.> "Bad Toruk, play well with your little brothers!"

You know what I mean. This thread could discuss anything about Toruk, any quandary someone has. As entertaining as making tiger noises are, they're not exactly what I would call...intelligent conversation? XD Unless you speak fluent tiger.  :P

Well, getting eaten by Toruk is certainly a quandary i guess. Much like getting eaten by a tiger. Only 7,000 feet above the ground.

See that shadow? It's the last one you're gonna see.

Yes, at least with Toruk you have a bit of warning when he's coming. That giant shadow is hard for him to hide. With him you at least have the chance of out flying him.

Then again, I doubt that, considering the name means "Last Shadow" :P

The only way Jake and Neytiri avoided Toruk was by flying low through those vines. If it hadn't been for those, I reckon the film would have been a lot shorter, with Jake getting eaten :S

hehe :P

Well I just said you had a chance. I didn't say it was a good one.  :P If you come across Toruk near the forest, diving into it is the best idea. Giant animal+narrow spaces=escape. This in contrast to a tiger that you don't know is sneaking up on you until it's too late.

See, here's the conundrum:

You can (hopefully) outfly a tiger--er . . . that's why we still have toucans, like that bird on the Froot Loops cereal box--best cereal ever!! In a sense, Jake "outflew" Palulukan, which is kind of the tiger of Pandora, and he was not happy about that! (kitties get so angry hen you take their food from them!--[stops to examine scratches on forearms])

But outflying Toruk requires "tiny spaces." In the open sky, you are lunch meat.

Toruk could get his own spin off, like the Batman of Pandora: dark, brooding, mysterious loner who fights the infestation (human encroachment). A misunderstood anti-hero. No one gets him--but a woman. (Oh god, this is sounding like every cheesy made for TV cop movie. I should stop before they cast Jean Claude Van Dame or that guy with a pony tail for a comeback role).

:P

On a totally unrelated note (too small for a thread). I just now accidentally found a classic old book about one "Colonel Harold Quaritch" on Google's book preview/search. I wonder if this was a book JC read as a kid (or as an adult--as he does seem to be very well versed in classics) and based our very own beloved "Colonel Miles Quaritch" on. I should skim through it and see if there are any strong correlations.

Kind of like how Jake and Neytiri got away that one time, by flying through vines and roots. It would be a pain if you were being chase with cover, like over a lake or sea.

The only flaw to this reasoning is if it isn't sunny out. If there's no sun to throw a shadow, you won't see it. So in this case, Toruk becomes like a tiger and eats you happily because you didn't have a clue he was coming.

Yeah, I was wondering about clouds. Palulukan has the best sense of smell on Pandora, with nantang coming in a close second (according to current measurement--no one in their right mind would try to measure Toruk's tracking abilities). But then again, Palulukan is the tiger of Pandora; so you would expect a heightened sense of smell. But how does smell travel in humid weather? If Toruk can't "see" you (in a large cloud), can he still sense you through smell, or some other sense I haven't had the chance to ask him about (from a safe distance)?

^Not sure if Toruk would be willing to answer that question before he ate you. ^.^

how does a hawk see? Probably the same thing. Fly out of cloud.

Well there is always the chance of out running a Palulukan/tiger, but only if they give you warning first. It was a good thing those rhino guys were running away or else Jake would have never noticed him and we would have had a much shorter movie. The point I was trying to make is that tigers (and probably Palulukan) are sneaky hunters, meaning you don't know he's there until he's on top of you. With Toruk he comes from above and thus will always give warning with his shadow. Of course if you don't have a convenient forest right next to you it wouldn't really matter XD

Oh he'd make a great Batman!

Oh my you must get this book, I'm very curious now!

(just to be silly for a moment)

When I think about it--I am glad the Na'vi chased the "aliens" off-planet. Once the mass migration of Terrans came over, there would be the inevitable commercialism and I would really hate to see "Tony the Palulukan" hawking Frosted Flakes of Awaiei.*

("They're Grrreat! But all-but-impossible to harvest!")

Toruk would laugh at him (then eat him for breakfast). That would be a "breakfast of champions." (One champion is eating; one champion *is* breakf--okay, I am going over here now.)

* tasty seeds from this plant (ASG pp 117) are dangerous to harvest, and non-Na'vi's can't seem to manage.
