First of all - I can't see any reason why posting in this thread should disqualify anybody from being NotW. It would be just wrong if it is true.

Okay, I know that I am not the only one who feels uncomfortable about posting here.  Maybe others will post here now if they have something to say.

Please don't write that off lightly - I've seen on many occasions how easily comments and actions get misconstrued.

Second - new members are still coming, yes, but.... how many of them are really active? I don't see any new people in learning subforums. Look at member list a order it by number of posts. About 2000 people didn't post anything. Another 2000 people posted between 1 and 10 messages. So most people here are "sleeping members".

Also - if I'm not mistaken, NotW was created to present people which are somehow important or great. Now it appears to me that we just seek for still active people. I don't say it is wrong or unacceptable, I like this subforum, but try to compare very first Notw posts with the current ones - people say less and less about themselves. I'm afraid that main idea of being NotW trickled out.
Just my opinion.

Well, I'm a computer programmer, so I solve technical problems.  While we can talk about what we think is happening, we don't really know without some research. :)

So, I've put my head against this problem, and done some analysis (I've run this past Mark), and this is what I have found:

Of the top 650 members on this forum with the most posts - these are members with more than about 50 posts:
- 577 do not have the NotW icon in their profile page.
- of those, 118 have been active in 2013.
- of those, 24 were last active in January.
-                31 were last active in February
-                63 have been active in March.

Now, I realise that not everyone wants to be NotW'd.  Let's assume 50% of people of those 63 don't want to be NotW'd.  That's about 30 weeks of NotW candidates from the 11 days of March alone.

So, I think that there are probably sufficient people to be NotW'd - the problem is finding them, and getting an acceptance in the time scale.

Must NotW not also earn? NotW should be something special, I think.

That depends what NotW is about.  It's purpose doesn't seem to be well defined.  Is it about who can post the most, or is it about becoming known to the community, finding out about your fellow members with similar interests?  My reading of the rules and traditions suggests that there are no guidelines or rules to govern how the selection of the next NotW is done, other than the need for it to be done ASAP - the choice of whom is left entirely up to the previous to choose using whatever criteria they deem fit.

One does not have to be NOTW already just to post in this thread, this one is for everyone :)

And there's not really any specific guidelines that you must meet/follow to become NOTW. You are correct in that is up to the previous holder of the title to choose :)

Unfortunately, the NotW section is 'sleeping'. :(
But maybe it is possible to get it back. :-\

Right now we have about 75 people that are on the forums on what could be considered a frequent basis. That's down from over 800 at the peak of activity, early in 2010. I think we should park the NotW program until we get closer to the next films and site activity picks back up.

I think that would be best, that or we lower the frequency of NotW submissions (say two NotWs per month), otherwise what I think will happen (may in fact already be happening) is something that started as an honorary thing becomes 'worthless'.

I considered it an honor to be chosen to become one amongst the few Na'vi of the Weeks, right now, I don't know whether all the NotWs realize the same thing. (That isn't meant as an insult, but I want to give my honest opinion.) Of course, I have zero authority concerning this project, but I do agree with statements above that freezing the NotW project temporarily would be best.

Agreed. I've been on a few other sites that focus on a very specific thing/series. They always seem to experience "boom and bust" cycles like these driven by that thing.

I've noticed that the few sections I view regularly here just aren't as active as they once were. :( Time marches on, and all we can do is wait until the next big thing.

The Na'vi language development is still rolling and right now that is quite important. I think we can coast along until interest picks back up (which it most certainly will).

A bit sad, but it's happening everywhere, activity dropping off is to be expected in this time between movies :(

That's great however the NotW title is something that must be earned. One must be nominated by the previous NotW.

I think this is the main issue, on top of what someone else said about speed. The current ideal seems to be passing the baton to someone else as quickly as possible, regardless of their suitability for... criteria not very well-defined in the first place. ???

I'm wary of suspending or slowing down NotW/F/M. I partially agree that awarding it as usual when there are fewer members around devalues it somewhat, but if it's slowed down, then the people who have it now had an advantage - however minor - compared to people who got it later. This is especially true if the forum gets more popular and we forget to speed it up again - which IMO is quite likely. (You may disagree, but I think it unlikely that someone is going to realize the forum has got busy, and then follow that through to suggesting NotUTP is sped up again, and then everyone says, "Oh yeah, that's what we said when we slowed it down in the first place.")

Perhaps someone should try calculating how long it takes the active members to "turn over," and that'll tell us whether or not the current cycle is reasonable? I know everyone intends to hang around forever, but sadly, that's not true.  :P

Vawmataw

We have less activity. I think we should suspend the service temporarily until we get more candidates or definitely. But the past Na'vies of the week will keep their banner.

I know? ^^
It is just that they don't do anything. Why does someone not find out who the last one was and tell him to nominate someone.

(This was done and discussion was made over the last few months including a poll to solicit opinions about the situation and criteria on eligibility to earn NotW...)

FYI from approximately a week ago, Toruk Makto posted this comment on the header for this thread on the main forum page...

The NotW program has been parked until we get closer to the next two films. Check back later!
