Who are you?

Hello, everyone!  My name here is "keylstxatsmen, but since I made that when I didn't know any Na'vi, now I prefer to go by "Keyl".    I live in Seattle, USA, with my wife Chie and my son Seiya (only his name is the same in English and Na'vi), and I lived for 3 years in Japan where I first met my wife.  As for languages, I can speak English and Japanese, and like everyone else am trying to learn the Na'vi language when I have time for such enjoyable work.  I my job I make computer games, more specifically a game called "Mystery Case Files".  Doing that and learning new languages are my favorite things.

Why are you here?

I saw the movie "Avatar" 4 times in IMAX 3D (with almost all my friends that wanted to go see it) and started to think that I want learn more about this world, Paul Frommer and this language that he made.  At that time I heard from someplace that someone had made this place and a few learners that had spoken to Dr. Froomer were meeting together here. After that I talked with many people at LearnNa'vi.org and started a project to write down all the spoken Na'vi from the movie.  I learned a lot this way about Pandora and made some new friends.  Every day I spend one or two hours (a Terran time measurement) writing and reading Na'vi and sometimes I get some speaking practice as well, but I need to do that more.

Where do your alias and profile pic come from?

I think that many people at LearnNa'vi.org thought they wanted to be one with the Na'vi and live on Pandora when they saw the movie. but I thought I want to be Norm.   My forum name is just my Earth name as the Na'vi might say it.  And about my forum picture, I chose it because laughter is important to me and I wanted people to not take me too seriously if I said something strange.

I can write in Na'vi, but speaking is still difficult.  Please tell me how you think my Na'vi is!  I'm always wanting to learn more.  My friends and my wife know that I like learning the Na'vi language but for the most part they don't understand why I'm doing it.  However, there are so many students here in this forum, I think I have enough "Na'vi" friends.

Prrte'!  But I haven't used it in everyday conversation.  I think that people at work wouldn't understand what I was saying!

In your opinion, what are the top three user-created content on the LN website?

Taronyu's dictionary is awesome!  I use that everyday, but I don't often use much else at the site.  When I started learning Na'vi there wasn't anything to help learners except Paul's post at Language Log and the speech from the movie Avatar!  I spent a lot of time studying incessantly  then and waiting patiently for more words from Paul.

Have you made any contributions to the LN community that you're particularly proud of?

Prrton and I started the forum Na'vi Nì'aw. Although at first few people posted there and many thought that it was a bad idea because the language was completely unfinished, now and in the future I think many will start to be able to write and speak Na'vi more and that Na'vi Nì'aw may become a good training ground.  Other than that, with Skyinou and with the help of everyone's ideas I complete the "20 questions for James Cameron" project.  We haven't yet gotten an answer from Cameron, but I think that it was a good project where everyone got to talk about Pandora and give their thoughts about the way the language could be grown.  And perhaps we will get an answer someday.

What is it that you liked/hated the most about Avatar ?

I've still seen Star Wars more than Avatar, but I'm sure that I will see Avatar much more in the future, while me and Star Wars are most likely done after those prequels. As I said before, in IMAX 3D I saw Avatar 4 times and listened to the audio uncountable times.  Sadly, I think that watching it at my house is nowhere near as good as at the IMAX, but I have seen it a few times there also.  I like the story of Avatar, even though it is not complicated.  I think I understand what Jake was going though and it reminds me of my time living in Japan.  Living in another culture is difficult, but you learn a lot and it changes you quite a bit as well.

Has Avatar  changed your life in any way?

No, I like learning the Na'vi Language and the movie Avatar but I like computer as well way too much to live like they do.  I want to the protect the Earth as well, but I did before I saw the movie.  Maybe I'll make a Na'vi version of myself.... however I have a lot of facial hair and they don't seem to have any.

If you could ask Frommer or Cameron three movie or language related questions what would they be?

Haha, I already asked 20 of them!  Now I just want to know the correct word for "wife" and to see more examples from Dr. Frommer.

What else do you do in you free time?

Well, now my wife and I are watching the show "Battlestar Galactica" everyday, but I also like playing and watching Soccer and learning other languages like Old English and Latin.  Although, when you have a child, there isn't too much spare time.

For animals I like Siamese Cats, Newfoundlands and Lemurs more than anything else.  Why? Probably because my family had Siamese cats and newfoundlands when I was I a kid and I have that type of cat right now, named Azu (short for Azreal).  Lemurs I just think are cute, but I would never want one in my house!  I'm afraid of any animal that could kill me easily.  So really I think Pandora would be a very scary place for me! I probably wouldn't go with using one of those Avatar bodies.

If we are talking about now, no the future, I think a Ninja would win.  The others would die before they even knew the ninja had killed them.  Really if you see a Ninja you're already dead, right?

A soccer ball, a guitar, and my wife.  Maybe that's against the rules, but if I didn't have someone to hang out with I wouldn't be happy.

Pandora (in an avatar) so I can speak to a Na'vi tribe! That or being a Jedi and moving stuff with my mind and using a lightsaber

If you were granted one single wish what would it be?

I would wish to live forever, in the past and the future as well.  That way I could learn all the languages of Earth and perhaps go to another world.  Then I could discover real aliens and learn there langauge, like in Avatar.  Probably a world where you outlive your family would be depressing, but I think that seeing the future unfold would be super cool.  Very selfish but awesome.

What is a question you'd ask yourself? How would you answer it?

Someone asked me how to say "Where the world goes to play" in Na'vi (it's our company slogan) and I said "Tseng a kifkeyä frapo kä fte uvan si" without having to look anything up.  She looked at me like you know Na'vi that well? and I thought wow I've spend a lot of time learning this language. Different then those stories but I thought it was interesting.

Can you tell me a story you hear or read recently that you liked?

Right now I'm reading a story called "Thomas Covinent".  It's a really upsetting story about a leper who is mostly a horrible person that makes me angry but I can't stop myself from reading more because it's so interesting!  Don't read that if you don't want to be angry and want to read more.

As far as lemurs go, they really can't kill you. I know some people who have kept lemurs in their homes. The biggest problem with them is their tendency to bounce off the walls! In all other respects, they are easy to work with and interact with. They are one of the very first animals that new volunteers work with at our zoo.

As far as lemurs go, they really can't kill you. I know some people who have kept lemurs in their homes. The biggest problem with them is their tendency to bounce off the walls! In all other respects, they are easy to work with and interact with. They are one of the very first animals that new volunteers work with at our zoo.

Irayo!  Those sentences are just a little to close together, I didn't think a lemur would be able to kill me (maybe a pack of them if they really wanted to ), but the bouncing around the house is why I wouldn't want one around.  That's really cool that they are the first animals that volunteers get to work with though, gives me some hope that I'll be able to hang out with one someday.
