DJ Makto

Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather when Amaya asked me if I wanted to be NoTW. I never thought I would be nominated as I am neither a prolific poster nor super knowledgeable about the Na'vi language.

But I digress, Irayo Amaya!!

Quote from: Question #1Who are you?

Mmm who am I? Good question. Well I reckon I will start with the basics, I'm DJ Makto, a 23 year-old cat-loving bloke who has never stopped being a student since finishing school. I don't consider my day complete, if I have not learned something new. ;)

My day job is currently doing freelance web design, copy-writing, and search engine optimization (SEO) work, I guess you could say that I am an internet entrepreneur.

Quote from: Question #2Why are you here?

One word: Avatar. I was moved on a emotional and spiritual level by the story. Of course I cannot deny that the special effects did also appeal to me. Ultimately it was the story and the characters that made the movie stand out from other movies I have seen.

As for finding Learn Na'vi and all the other Avatar communities, I started searching around for more information about the language and a translation of the Na'vi choruses in the soundtrack.

Voila!

I found Learn Na'vi and was quite taken with how nice the people were. Though I did lurk the forums for about a month before I finally registered to post on the forum. The rest is history.

Quote from: Question #3Where do your alias and profile pic come from?

My original alias was Kunsìp Makto, but as time went on I figured it would be more appropriate to be called DJ Makto. The idea for the name DJ Makto came about during a random composing session on FL Studio where I was toying around with making an Avatar inspired progressive house/trance remix (still working on that) and it suddenly occurred to me that a Na'vi word for music would be a more appropriate name for me than Kunsìp. Since I did not know the word for music, I settled on DJ as I had recently started teaching myself how to mix music.

Of course, some of my Na'vi speaking friends now jokingly ask me why I ride DJs. :D

My profile pic is of a Scottish Fold kitten, I am very fond of cats—particularly Scottish Folds.

Quote from: Question #4Srak nga tsun nìna'vi pivlltxe?

Oel ngati kameie! Ngaru lu fpom srak?

I find it hard to say how good my Na'vi is.. My spoken Na'vi is still accented with the occasional mangled pronunciation. And I have managed to memorize a sizable vocabulary. My grammar however, is terrible—in the sense that I can't quite figure out the correct lenition or infix fast enough in my head while trying to write or speak.

That being said my Na'vi is a little bit rusty as I have not had as much time to study as I did in the past.

Bad Makto...

Quote from: Question #5What's you favorite Na'vi word? Did you incorporate it (or others) into your everyday vocab?

Skxawng! Hands down, that word has managed to successfully infiltrate my everyday vocabulary and replace its English equivalent.

Quote from: Question #6In your opinion, what are the top three user-created content on the LN website?

In your opinion what are the top three user content on LN
1.   The Learn Na'vi Website
2.   Taronyu's Dictionary
3.   Project Ngay Nume

Quote from: Question #7Have you made any contributions to the LN community that you're particularly proud of?

Well I suppose my latest and best contribution to the Avatar community is being co-founder, cast member and producer of the Avatar Nation podcast. I briefly helped with the sound and editing work of some of the later episodes the Radio Avatar podcast.

Also behind the scenes, I am involved in a few more soon to be announced projects. ;)

Quote from: Question #8What is it that you liked/hated the most about Avatar ?

Well lets start with the numbers eh?

I watched the original theatrical version twice, once in IMAX and once in Real3D. I also saw the theatrical re-release in Real3D once as well. As for DVDs I actually held off on buying the first DVD release when I heard that it only included the movie itself. It was a long and agonizing wait for the Collectors Edition be released. It was worth the wait though, and I have already lost count on how many times I have watched the DVD.

Best way to watch Avatar? IMAX hands down. Before Avatar I had only watched a few nature documentaries which were incredible to watch. Watching Avatar in IMAX is mind blowing and far outshines Real3D or your garden variety 2D screens. Once you see it in IMAX, you can never go back I say. :D

What I like about the movie itself, the story, the characters, and the setting for starters. The fact that James Cameron was able to tell a story that was so spiritually and emotionally moving. The visual effects and the technology that went into the production was stunning as well. Need I say more? ;)

And of course being a connoisseur of sound, I must say that the sound design and music was absolutely sublime.

On the dislike side, nothing towards the movie.

If anything, my quarrels are directed to those who just did not "get" Avatar and do everything they can to proverbially trample the movie with half-baked memes like "Dancing with Wolves in Space". I just simply sigh and mutter skxawng...

Quote from: Question #9Has Avatar  changed your life in any way?

I would have to say yes.

Ironically, Avatar actually inspired me to move from being a casual listener of music to actually becoming a self taught amateur/pro-hobbyist sound engineer, musician, and composer. It also inspired me to start re-teaching myself how to play the piano—something I regrettably abandoned when I was just a wee young lad.

I suppose Avatar has changed my life in the sense that it has inspired me to explore new things and actually try to live life. Life is too short to let it just past you.

Quote from: Question #10If you could ask Frommer or Cameron three movie or language related questions what would they be?

To James Cameron: Will you expand the Avatar canon with books written by different authors (like Star Wars did)

To James Horner: Why do I hear snippets of the melodies from Titanic in the track Becoming One With The People?

To Paul Frommer/James Cameron: How important will the Na'vi language be in the dialogue of both Avatar sequels? With the humans gone, there should be almost no spoken 'inglisi right?

Quote from: Question #11What else do you do in you free time?

Well as I mentioned before, lots of music and sound design stuff for fun. I'm slowly moving towards doing photography and video work as I begin to teach myself the basic concepts and acquire the gear. I also like to stay physically fit, so I run, swim, lift weights, etc.

I watch very little television, however I am massive fan of the following television shows: Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Eureka, all the Stargate shows, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary, Doctor Who, and Torchwood.

Quote from: Question #12Name your top three favorite Earth animals from most favorite to least. Why those? What's the animal you're most terrified of?

1.   Cats – they melt my heart with their cuteness, and I have two cats named River and Schrodinger (yes she is named after the famed physicist).
2.   Whales—Always have been fond of them since I was a young lad.
3.   Bees—I used to hate them, now I just have healthy respect for them and keep my distance when I can.

Quote from: Question #13Pirate, ninja, zombie, or robot?

Robotic Pirate Kittens!!

Awesome cuteness?!

Quote from: Question #14What three items would you take to a desert island and why?

1. A sheet of plastic
2. String
3. A knife

The first two items could help me make a solar still and ensure a supply of fresh water. The third item would be handy for obvious reasons.

Quote from: Question #15If you could travel to anywhere in space and time (including fictional universes), where would you go and why?

Give me a TARDIS or Captain Jack's Vortex Manipulator any day.

Quote from: Question #16If you were granted one single wish what would it be?

True happiness in life.

Quote from: Question #17What is a question you'd ask yourself? How would you answer it?

Q. What is the meaning of life?

A. 42.

Yes I'm that cheeky.

Quote from: Question #18True or false?

1. I briefly played professional tennis
2. I have a eidetic memory, which helped me memorize and perfectly recite the entire Edgar Alan Poe's poem: The Raven at the age of 10
3. I can speak a little Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and a few words of Welsh

Quote from: Question #19: My Life is AVTRWhat is the funniest, weirdest, or most embarrassing Na'vi or Avatar  related thing that has happened to you?

I really can't pin any one particular experience, but back when I was working harder at learning Na'vi, certain words began to intrude in to everyday conversation without me realizing. Naturally my parents were a little bit baffled, but with time they accepted these occurrence as another one of my "quirks". I have the most tolerant and understanding parents who have no quarrel with my Avatar obsession.

Quote from: Question #20: Bonus QuestionIf you had the choice between groceries for a week or going to Avatar again in the theatre which would you choose?

Hmm tough question, I would probably lean toward the groceries, as I don't react well without food. But if that theater was IMAX...

Grrr... Choices...

Well that is me, thanks again for nominating me! It is a pleasure and a honour to be NoTW. I might possibly add a video if I have the time. ;)

Congratulations DJ Makto!

I too am a cat person.  I just love their very funny ways.  Just yesterday I sat and watched my cat, Shadow, watching the birds in the basil plant eating the seeds.  (I never knew that birds liked the basil seeds.  Never seen them eat that before.)  The cat sat there making that funny cat noise they make when they are watching birds.  It's somewhere between a meow and a bah.

And I am also a music person.  So finish that music I want to hear that also.

My guesses ...
1.  True
2.  False
3.  True

I'm not sure why.

Cheers, I shall resolve to double my efforts to at least finish a track, much less a full albums worth of remixes  ;)

Hehe yeah, watching cats on the prowl is always fun. My cats do the same thing with moths (very few birds where I live)

Aye, got several distinct themes kinda mapped out in my head, but just not feeling the sounds that I have been programming into Absynth/Massive though.

Perhaps I am just being too much of a perfectionist, and I need to get off my txìm and get something done and finished. ;)

Congrats on NoTW! :D

Looking forward to hearing your tracks.
