I did try to fiddle an even more alpha version of Diaspora and install it on my server. It is very customizable and does have interesting features. I guess it is even better now. Having a Na'vi social network respecting the data and privacy of everyone would be great.  :)

I figured since most people on facebook have two profiles, one for their na'vi persona and one for their actual persona. They can have their na'vi persona over on a na'vi social network where it's properly translated. Since we are from what I can see quite a close community I can't think that the problem with social networks of friends being on one so you must be on that one being an issue as it'd be a hundred or so moving not thousands. Just my logic anyway.

As for diaspora being translated it's nice to see people signing up to translate, not many seem to be translating. I like you have busy schedules too so I understand that. I have 4 exams so I doubt I'll have much time at all for translations. If anyone knows na'vi well enough to translate checking current translations (since I wrote most and I'm not so great with Na'vi hrh) and translating new text would be fantastic.

The facebook translation group are doing an amazing job also, looking over there to see the translations they're making could help us translate diaspora so maybe looking there would be good too. It's nice to see people are interested and helping. Any updates or ideas will be appreciated.

This would be really great. A good tool to maintain our community and anticipate the sequels.

I just thought I'd post an update showing the latest view of joindiaspora.com once you've logged in with Na'vi as your language. The two screenshots are attached. I'm very happy to see diaspora make such huge leaps (if you look at the screen shots last time) I hope more get involved and the next push yields an equally impressive jump.

Great!

This sounds fantastic, the more corrections and also new translations that can be made the better and also when/if the new na'vi social network comes along the better it will be if we can have the entire site in na'vi (wouldn't be so fantastic if we had lots of english patches throughout the site)

Well, I don't personally use Diaspora all that much, so I don't expect I'll be translating that much, either. :/

I think diaspora might be the perfect software though if we decide to make a Na'vi social network put our own little instance on a server, set the default language to na'vi and we can have it specifically for na'vi

Does someone want to host a potential Diaspora server by the way? :)

You have a very good experience in computing: your use of "I think" is totally ironic.  ;D

Go for it. ;)

I'm just waiting for a new server to rent to become available at the host I typically use. I'll keep you guys updated might be a while as It's also exam period for me so unfortunately LN has been temporarily bumped down in priority for me.

I've been looking around and things but I have no servers currently which are high enough spec to run this and I don't currently have the funds to rent any. If anyone can help out ether by setting it up or providing me with a server I can set it up on (via ssh) that'd be awesome, otherwise we might have to wait a bit until i can think of a solution.

Hmm, I have my on personal Dedibox, but it already runs :

- Two websites ( http://na.learnnavi.org/ and http://na.learnnavi.org/real-navi/ )
- A Minecraft server with dynamic map
- A BigBlueButton web conferencing server

Here is the hardware configuration of my Box :

I have no idea of the specs required for Diaspora, but I can try to host it. I do need a chance to learn Ruby anyway. I can eventually configure an SSH access for you as well.

Those specs would be fine. Erm if you don't mind that would be great pm me the details and of a ssh and i'll scp my key across and such. I think once the initial setup is done it won't take too many resources just a few ruby things are compiled with rvm which cripples low memory machines (like 512mb memory which are low end VPS's i admin for small sites and IRCd servers.

If it should turn out to be necessary, I could rent a server from the same hoster I rented my own server from.
The main issue would be the requirements for Diaspora in terms of memory usage, disk space, and processor power so I know what type of server I should request.
Btw.: What type of database is used for Diaspora? MySQL?

To grant access to the Diaspora sources there are several options, with both ssh and IPsec being feasible (although the latter has some advantages since I would be able to export parts of the directory tree as an NFS mount, and for Windows users I could even facilitate a Samba server). If necessary, I could implement both (ssh and IPsec, that is).

However, I need to figure out some issues with Strongswan first (premature loss of the IPsec tunnel - an immediate reconnection is possible, but that nevertheless is annoying).

Yep diaspora uses mysql, i doubt the requirements are high, I have a server locally I can test on and see roughly what I can constrict it to and have it work well. I'd host it myself but since I moved my internet at home is flakey and drops out a fair amount not to mention the speed is terrible (it's ASDL too so upload will be next to non-existant, I think it's only designed for TCP receipt packets :P).

Irayo :)

Kea tìngäzìk, ma 'eylan.
Right now I need to wait a little before I can get that started, but you may consider me to be on stand-by right now. ;)

Btw.: What would be a good domain name to get this started? I'm open to suggestions, and with a domain name we would be able to get started right away (I won't take a .de domain, though, but I thought about something like .org or .net - or whatever would be appropriate, if necessary even as part of LN.org's domain).

I have no idea domain wise, maybe others can wade in with suggestions :) I'd certainly want the url in na'vi though, it means we might want to pick a word or two without non-ascii characters, I ran into that problem with my blog >.<
