I think it is likely that this project will pick up steam and be very interesting to a lot of people, so I figured creating a new thread for it would be a good idea, instead of putting it in the previously speculatory Facebook Translation thread. So, here we are.

This will put a lot of your Facebook text from English into Na'vi. It works by just pasting over the stuff using Javascript, and not by using an API or the Facebook translators bench. In essence, this is much quicker, easier, and glitchy. Just pretend we're accessing Facebook from up in the Hallelujah Mountains instead of back in the base.
==================================================================
The File

NìNa'vi Keypuk

I did not create this. Neskie Manuel did originally, and then Kevin Scannell pointed it out on a list I follow, and I downloaded Neskie's old code and translated what I could into Na'vi. I wish I could take credit, but I can't for anything else. However, I do hope to improve the code if I can.

This thing is super-beta. It's very iffy in places, and it doesn't work for everything. BUT it works for some things, and I think we can get the rest going, I hope. What's important is that if you know JS, if you have suggestions for how to translate certain terms better - get in touch. I am going to keep all of the code in the dedicated github. PM me if you want push/pull access.

If you download and use it, let me know! Post here. Please. It'll be good to know how many people are actually using this thing.

Installation Directions

(Directions lifted from here)

So far this only works on computers where you can download and install a little Greasemonkey file. It won't work on mobiles etc.

1. Make sure your Facebook account's language is set to "English (UK)". (To check, go to the down arrow in the top right hand corner, then "Account Settings" and then "Language")

2. What Internet Browser do you use? So far, I only know how to make this work on Firefox and Google Chrome. If you don't have these browsers, then you can download them very quickly and easily here.  If/when you have Google Chrome, you can go straight to Step 3.

If you use Firefox for your Internet browser, then go here and install the "add-on". Then go to Step 3.

3. Follow the link above and click "install" in the top right hand corner. You might need to close the browser and re-open it, but basically that's all there is to it. Your FB should now have quite a bit of Na'vi in it.

=================================================================
Current Translations (May not be as up-to-date as the code itself)

Green is for words which have been translated and (should) work.
Red is for English words to translate.
And orange is for words that don't currently work with the script, either because they aren't grabbed, or because they break something.

I'll go over your translations during lunch. I'm super excited about this and will definitely use it! Hopefully we can get it working one day so that it's not so glitchy.

As a question, though. Wont every single Facebook UI upgrade or change break this?

none of these are plural, when they should be.
you have eveng down as children when it should be ayeveng for children or 'eveng for child.
the same for friends - you have it down as eylan when it should be down as ayeylan for frends or 'eylan for friend.

Na'vi plurals can be shown without ay+ on the noun (just the lenited form), this is known as the "short plural" form. See page 7 of the Na'vi in a Nutshell guide: http://www.learnnavi.org/docs/Navi_in_a_Nutshell.pdf

Taronyu

Lenition from the ay- prefix means that eylan is the plural of 'eylan. So, they are plurals. :)

Thanks for the help Ftiafpi! Edited and pushed. I added some more:

`Eylan Ayfalulukanä

Tewti nang!

I will have to set this up on my Facebook account, but probably my home account first.

On the short plurals, it has been suggested that they should not be used in places where they may cause confusion. One of these is words that begin with a glottal stop, like 'eylan. It is easy to miss the initial glottal stop. So, either eylan or ayeylan is correct for 'friends'. (Short plurals are customary but always optional.) Use the long form where there might be any confusion.

Yawey ngahu!

Woo!
In terms of the GitHub stuff, I recommend creating a new repository for this project and sticking the file in there - then anyone with a GitHub account can just "fork" it, modify their copy and submit changes back to you for approval all from the really nice Pull Requests interface in GitHub itself. Collaborative coding :D

Ok, I've made a dedicated github repo for this. https://github.com/RichardLitt/keypuk-ninavi/

I've added in Phone, and seen to all of your edits. Thank you, everyone!

Txonä, could you not comment it like that? Makes it harder for me to edit when I have to hover. Also, feel free to just give the correct ones - I think you were right on all counts.

I'll update the list at the top now.

Taronyu

Ok - I've updated the list on the first post, and I'll do that accordingly whenever i get the change/there is something to update. If you see words in red - translate them for me! Would be great to get this full up.

Also, I noticed something else - you must set your language to English (UK). There are major punctuation differences in the US version that means it is much more glitchy. As you can appreciate, that's not cool. Switch to UK for the best, as that's what I'm doing, or send me a list of words to convert into US.
