Giving a talk at Iowa State, "Giving Avatar its Voice: Creating the Na'vi Language."

Oh hey, they actually mentioned his Disney film by name.  That's news to me.

Never heard of that film though. Is it still in production? Or did it flop?

Wish I was in Ames, Iowa! I hope there are folks here close enough to attend and report firsthand on the event. I also hope a recording will be available.

You probably do not wish you were in Ames, Iowa, right now.  It (along with my home in WI) are in the path of a blizzard. The real insanity should be over the day before he arrives, so it probably won't get cancelled.

Thanks. I got an initial impression that the dates following the title were the dates he worked on the film. The IMDB listing is here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401729/

Looks like a fun film.

So I wonder what happens when 10 foot tall blue kitties meet 12 foot tall green barbarians  ???

Hope the weather does get straightened out in time.
Never been to Ames, but I have spent a couple weeks in Des Moines over the years...

The bottom of that page had a link to How to Speak Na'vi: A traveller's guide to the language of Pandora, another article by the same reporter.

While I love to see Na'vi in the news, some of this is a bit painful:

Pay (Puh-eh) = water
Irrotok (Ear-oh-tock) = smile
Ngaru lu fpon srak? (Na-ru loo phone sack) = How are you?

phone sack?    :)
Oeru syaw "Tirea Ikran" kop slä frakrrmi layu oe "Grammar Skxawng"   :)

Too bad there isn't a recording...

Yes, that would be nice.

I was originally thinking about attending this as it's a doable distance for me, unfortunately the horrible weather here this week made that too difficult.   :(

William, were you able to make the lecture. Sounded like you were going to try.

No, no, not even in good weather.  If he's ever in Chicago, I'll be there.  But Ames, IA is too far away.

Duh! Of course it's "phone sack" that's how I've been pronouncing it this whole time. :P

Heheheh, I'm going to chuckling about "phone sack" for weeks, I bet.

Ekirä

And this one? :P

Nga za'u fitseng pxim srak? (Na za fat-ooh-sang phom sack) = Do you come here often?

Where did the "ooh" come from?

The only explanation is that this guy decided to make up fanciful pronunciations....but I wonder why he didn't just check LN as he linked to it at the bottom. :-\

Oh, actually please do, he seems to get a real kick out of these things and I bet he'd laugh quite a lot about "phone sack". XD
