Just a note on NAS

The Network Attached Storage (NAS) box has started acting up and causing a ruckus under the hood. It's always been a bit twitchy, but now the NFSd process on it has popped a cog for real. I have a new one ordered, but until it arrives and I can get it hooked in, the weekly system snapshot and complete forum backups are not happening. It should be noted that the daily database backups to offsite storage are still running, so we aren't missing out on protecting the important stuff. I'll post an update when we are back to normal.

Can the NAS device have a firmware/OS refresh or upgrade?

Probably, but I've never liked the thing anyway. I have to go power cycle it every 4 or 5 months.  It is time for a better one.  -M.

Shiny new NAS arrived and I have two 2TB Western Digital WDBMMA0020HNC-NRSN drives to go in it. I will probably be installing in the next few days. Fortunately, this does not involve any downtime for LN services. More later!  -M.

Ah, you used WD Red series NAS drives. Good choice!

This thing is going to have to operate under a pretty heavy load at some point. Might as well do it right.   :)

I'm glad hear that LN server has more storage (I have 2TB storage in my PC  :P )

Here's the little beastie. Just finished configuring it and will be running it out to the data center tomorrow...

The server itself has 2.7T of SAS RAID 5.  This NAS/NFS box is for weekly filesystem snapshot backups and daily backups of the forum, database and other important stuff.  At the risk of sounding grandiose, the content of this server represents something unique in human history - the development of a constructed language by real-time international collaboration on the internet. This data has to be protected.  -M.

Update:  The Intel NAS box I got for a popular price on eBay is too old and obsolete for the FreeBSD server to recognize. Apparently it only does UDP-based NFS shares. Nice that this information was nowhere to be found in the documentation.  Sooo...  I popped by Fry's and got a Seagate Business NAS 4-bay box and am currently configuring it now.

Anybody want an Intel SS4000-E box with no drives?

I might be interested in that box. I didn't know NFS uses UDP. You learn something new every day!

Well it doesn't anymore. That's kind of the point. Everything else works on it, just not NFS.
