Oh man, I wish there was something like this when I was that age! Shoot, I wish there would be something like that right now! I think something like this would make me enjoy English classes a bit more...and I'm sure that if I was in an English that did this, I would be the resident Na'vi expert lol. *sigh, I have yet to meet a SINGLE Avatar fan in my area.

If you want it to happen. Go MAKE it happen.

There are a lot of people who may be interested in the Na'vi language even if the are not devotees of the film. When I was in high school (granted a small private school K~12) my former English teacher from the 6th and 7th grade let me go teach Spanish and Japanese to her students once a week for 20 minutes each session. I bet there are some "out there" teachers at your local schools who would really be into your introducing their students to new concepts. Teachers find the "same old thing" over and over again semester after semester boring too.

It will require some curriculum development and prep work on your part, but there are tons of resources around here to help you cobble together something.

Remember that although we/you may not be FLUENT, we know a lot more than those who know NOTHING.  ;)

And BTW/side note, if folks want K. Pawl to come speak at local events, find teachers/administrators/public officials willing to cough up the budget to get him there. If you start planning now for 2011... ??

   ;D

Oh wow, I totally didn't see this post until just now. stupid phone didn't alert me that there was a new reply here. Anyway, wow that's some interesting thought! Y'know I've been waiting to get a chance to randomly write some Na'vi on the chalkboard in my classroom, but there hasn't been a time when no one's in there. I want to write when there's no one there so I can pretend not to know who wrote on the board then watch everyone's WTF looks then go and explain everything that's written...thus introducing my class to the wonderful world of Na'vi :) *OMG* I could start a club! I'm just not sure how many people I'd get to sign my petition. I'd something like 300 sigs. I won't be able to act on it any time soon though because I'm very busy with school, work, and assorted other commitments. It's an idea though :)

Well, even if you get just one person interested then it's worth it.

That's true, but my college requires a ridiculous amount of student signatures before they consider granting "clubship" to someone. And...not going to lie, but part of it is also me being extremely shy about approaching people to ask them to sign something. Even something I'm this passionate about :(

You could go the passive-aggressive route, and put up signs asking people to consider creating the club, and then just have the actual petition somewhere they can go sign it.  That way you don't have to do face-time with anybody  ;)

And what rule says you need the 'blessing of some power-that-be' to form a club? A group of us (all members were math/science geeks) ran the underground newspaper in our High School. We published our 'newspaper' on the door of the teacher's lounge. Most of the teachers looked at it with disdain. But our favorite target, the head of the social studies department, secretly loved it! Remember, Na`vi is a grassroots movement, just like our underground newspaper was.

As far as signatures go, find a couple of people who will 'come on board' early', and get them to solicit signatures as well. With perhaps half a dozen people soliciting signatures, you might get what you are looking for much quicker.

This also might be a fun activity for a summer camp, or a park program.

Hmm....now THAT'S a thought! There's plenty of bulletin boards all over my campus. I could put up the fliers with a preset meet time/place, see how many people show up and then have the club petition there to sign! I know this will involve face-to-face interaction, but since the people there knew what they were coming to, I'll know that they are already fans and there won't be any awkwardness. Now I have to look into the posting policies of the bulletin boards, and then.....oh jeez....find time to have meetings and get lessons together. That's gonna be complicated. Well....hmm...I suppose I could use the PNgN Prezis!

One more thing: I am open to ideas for flier designs :) I want them to look cool and eye-catching!

My school's student leadership. Sure a group of people can meet at a set time monthly, weekly, or even daily. But to be recognized as an official club and get a room specially reserved on certain days/times, I have to be granted "clubship" from my student leadership and the faculty advisors.

And if that process is anything like it is at my school, it takes months and a lot of handcramping to get that status.
