I have 5 within a reasonable distance of where I live, but no confirmation yet that any of them will actually show it. :/
There's a good chance the AMC downtown will, however.

IMAX is better than regular cinemas with 3D, isn't it? In what way again?

The screen is much, much larger, with a corresponding increase in display resolution.

TRUE IMAX (The film stuff, AKA Grand Cinema, or 15/70) has a much much larger screen and much better quality picture (*theoretically).

Digital IMAX is usually retrofit into existing auditoriums, so has a marginally bigger screen, and about the same (Or if rumor is true, worse) resolution.  About the only thing it has going for it is a better sound system.

Then there's the 3d technology...  IMAX uses linear polarization.  What that means is you have to look at the screen perfectly horizontally.  If you're even a little off you'll see ghosting.  In some seats it's even worse, you have to turn your head different ways to not see ghosting on different parts of the screen because of the seating and projection angles.  On the other hand, RealD uses circular polarization, so you can angle your head however you want.  (Dolby 3d is, arguably, even better, as it uses different wavelengths of light for left and right, so not only is there no angle issues, you get a brighter picture overall, and at the same time it darkens everything else more.)

So tì'efumì oeyä, unless you go see it in a true big screen IMAX Grand Cinema rather than digital IMAX, save the money.  (And if they have it at the Metreon in SF, I may do just that.  Hello 90 foot screen!)

Personally I'll be seeing it in Cinemark's "XD" technology - it is supposed to be their answer to digital IMAX - and carries the same ticket price premium.  A lot of the same perks; bigger screen, better sound system, etc...  But it uses RealD technology.

* Theoretically, because digitally produced films like Avatar are rendered in a certain resolution, and I've heard that resolution is around 2k lines, which means any discussion of more display resolution is likely moot.

That's unfortunate... Thanks for bringing it up!
I checked, and the AMC I was planning on going to is apparently the not-actually-IMAX type. I guess I'll be seeing the on a normal screen unless the Museum of Science or NE Aquarium plan to show it.

Maybe I'll drive out to the real IMAX in Reading, since it would be my first time watching the movie in an actual theater :P

Most IMAX theaters are the digital variety.

Apparently there's a map at http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=113621990356540393221.000469b6c5915161c3667 - which is at least accurate for the 6 in this area.  (Technically 7 but I'm not sure the 7th is even in operation anymore.)  Not sure about accuracy elsewhere.

There's also the slightly more informative http://www.lfexaminer.com/ImaxMapUS.htm - which in some cases even tells you the screen types/sizes in addition to the projection types.

For all Swedes out there, I just got this mail.
THIS CAN MEAN AWESOMENESS:

QuoteHej igen,
Vår programsättningsavdelning har Avatar i åtanke på de orter vi nyligen installerat 3D-utrustning på biografen men ingenting är satt än. På de orter vi inte har eller har planerat 3D kommer vi inte att visa Avatar igen.
