All of which brings us to the Na'vi. Not only were they the giant blue cat-people of James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar, Na'vi is also the name of their language. A constructed language made specifically for the movie by USC professer Paul Frommer. Though created with a vocabulary of only about a thousand words, the enormous success of the film is already spawning a following through such sites as LearnNaVi.org, which features everything from a 500-word dictionary of the language to a pocket-guide in .pdf.

Cameron engaged University of Southern California linguistics professor Paul Frommer to create a new language for the film. The Na'vi tongue is heavy with consonants, 21 of them, and the syntax is different than English. For example, "The river is long" becomes "River long be" in Na'vi. Following are translations of some words that figure prominently in the film, from the website, www.learnnavi.org:

    * tsteu -- brave
    * txopu -- fear
    * kame -- to see [spiritual sense]
    * utral -- tree
    * muntxa -- mated
    * Omatikaya -- Blue Flute Clan
    * tawtute -- sky person
