Yeah, British English is pretty much a separate language.

Huh, I didn't know I was bilingual. :P

Is it really true that there are signs on businesses in the UK that say 'English spoken here, American understood'?

If so, I haven't seen then.

Then again, I'm in Scotland. That's a whole 'nother mess.

Well, I think they clearly realized that the Sun article was 75% crap. But, yes, you will never live that down. XD

Not sure I'll have need to be Na'vigating the backwaters of Pandora anytime soon, though.

And Garmin's stuff is pretty nice, until it directs you the wrong way into a one-way street.
Hee.

This morning, I ventured out at 5 AM to a store that was undercutting everyone in the area (as well as the Internet) on Garmin GPS prices for 'Black Friday'. (Whatever happened to calling this day 'Christmas Opening', which is what we called it when I worked in retail.)  After agonizing over the cost/benefit ratio of a number of models, I settled on a Nuvi 1300. Its not the most sophisticated or feature packed GPS Garmin makes, but it is more than adequate for my needs.

After finding a lost USB cable, I had no trouble whatsoever installing the new voice. Instead of coming up as some variant of British English, it shows up as simply 'Avatar'.

Now, this is a basic 'voice', so it does not announce street names, etc. But it does give good and faithful guidance. And it is helping me with pronunciation. So already, the investment is paying off. So even though I know my way around town, I am letting the Satnav navigate for me, just so I can hear it speak. And I am frequently using my own (usually better) routes, so I can listen to the recalculation suggestions. ftär mìn set
