Fluency/Understanding measure?
« on: June 23, 2011, 04:24:43 pm »
What would I be known as if I mostly understand how the language is put together (except for a few verbs), but I just can't seem to remember words? ??? :-\

Just like almost everyone else here.

but really, It's really difficult to define "Beginner", "Intermediate" and "Advanced" and it is not currently possible for any person to be fluent in Na'vi.

I don't know about that, Tirea. From what I have heard of you, you come pretty darn close!

That said, some 'proficiency yardsticks' would be useful tools.

proficiency is subjective, and the OP brings up a good case: you could know EVERY grammar rule but know hardly ANY words and on the other hand you could know EVERY word but hardly ANY grammar. what WOULD you call that? O.o certainly not a beginner either way but it's difficult to say.

in a super general sense, an advanced or "fluent" speaker I would say knows nearly if not every grammar rule which has been thus far disclosed and knows a large portion if not all current vocab. An intermediate knows enough to have conversations with a few mistakes here and there but can definitely get by. A beginner is anyone from knowing nothing of the language to being able to construct simple sentences.

But that's just me. Like I said, many others might define these differently, so clearly that's not THE definition of what those are.

Most people here I would say are either beginners or intermediate. I'm not sure if anyone is brave enough to call themselves fluent or advanced though others may say otherwise. ;)
