5-disc soundtrack - Worth it?
« on: March 13, 2011, 09:58:02 pm »
I found this on eBay the other day, and was thinking of getting it: http://bit.ly/gqFOJz

I think I've seen a few people here mention owning this (although the search tool on this forum can't seem to find them...maybe a keyword issue?), and was wondering: Is it worth it? Anyone have comments on it (or the seller...who seems to be only one who has them)?

It does have a lot of stuff that's not on the single disc I have (or Youtube :P), so...

I'm planning to order it tomorrow afternoon if I can, so if it's a total waste of money, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

I would mark that as not only an illegal bootleg, but also an illegal vendor. The 5-CD version was never released, if I remember correctly, but rather, leaked.

I could be completely mistaken though.

(or Youtube :P)

The single CD don't have most of the contents there, true.
But Youtube? There is a 3CD version and "The Hunt" from 5CD, it covers a lot, just if you don't care about the unreleased tracks. ::)

That's what I was thinking. The pics on eBay make it look like the CDs may be CD-Rs with lightscribe labels :P

Also, I just spent some more time searching (used Google to search LN this time) and found this a few moments ago: http://forum.learnnavi.org/official-soundtrack-music/avatar-the-definitive-edition/ (literally about 5 topics below mine...originally missed it because of the topic name) Seze (and apparently a few others) bought the exact same set from the same seller...and were pleased with it.

...just if you don't care about the unreleased tracks. ::)
That's probably my main reason reason for wanting it.

I think I may just get it anyway and see how it goes...

Any other comments on this?

EDIT: Fixed something...was in a rush this morning :P

EDIT2: Decided to buy it. eBay feedback seemed to indicate there are a lot of people who were happy with it. No negative feedback on the seller aside from a single "lost in transit" (which the seller replaced).

If you don't care too much about if it's legal or not, simply download it somewhere without a bid or pay.
If you care, it's actually somehow illegal to get it / buy it...

There ws a very limited official release of the 5CD ones, to people who had worked on Avatar IIRC. Even the 'official' ones came in plain cases on blank CDs so looked very much like fakes - one copy was ripped by someone and released on the internet so a lot of people just make sets from that.

Won't download it. As for being illegal to buy it, it's probably no more illegal than buying a real movie poster (all of those say "Sale or transfer is prohibited" or similar on the bottom edge, yet you can still buy them...).

That's what I read somewhere...and every picture I've seen shows plain discs as well. I've seen plenty of offerings for illegal downloads of the rip (as a matter of fact, these make up a good chunk of results when I google for the thing).

If you don't support piracy then don't buy it.  I can almost 100% guarantee you what you see for sale is a pirated copy.  If it was one of the extremely rare real ones, it would be FAR more expensive than what it's being listed for.  There also wouldn't be a ton of ratings for the exact same item on the page.  I HIGHLY doubt one person somewhere in the UK somehow got his or her hands on a stash of the real CDs, given that they were a promotional item to staff.

That's also my opinion. Of course you can decide whatever you want, but just be aware of that also. :)

Yes.. If you don't support piracy, then don't even BUY this "official pirated" copy...

Actually, in my opinion buying it would be FAR worse than downloading it, since then you would be supporting - with actual real money - someone who has downloaded it.

Neither have I, hence the reason I wanted to buy it.

As for this thing, I'm at college right now. I texted my sister (who has the ebay account), and told her I wasn't interested in it any more. She replied saying she already ordered it :( Guess I'm stuck with this one.

Whether or not the thing will be decent...I have some friends who've bought counterfeits in the past, and quality varies widely by item. I've seen almost perfect counterfeit Monsters Inc. DVDs that could only be distinguished by the UPC being printed upside down on the cardboard sleeve (friend got suckered for this)...and I've seen total junk that might as well have "FAKE!" written on it.

Lessons learned:
* Don't buy counterfeit media. If you want to buy counterfeit music/movies, you might as well just download them.
* I should not tell my sister I want something off ebay until I've verified it's not counterfeit.

There are at least some great tracks on it :P, including the actual versions used in the film rather than the versions found on the OST, and a few that didn't make any appearance as well as alternate versions.

Good to hear it's at least got good music on it. One of the reasons I wanted it was for the movie versions of some songs, so I'll at least still get the content I wanted :)

Something like
Huh. I've never seen them in the swamp of results I get (I just search for "Avatar Soundtrack"). Guess I need to spend more time looking. Learn something new everyday I suppose...

It's good to see many of these are on there. :) Irayo for pointing them out.
