"Leona Lewis - I See You" translated into Na'vi
« on: March 19, 2010, 11:56:56 am »
My attempt at translating Leona Lewis's "I See You" Avatar theme song.

Corrections and suggestions welcome. Words that we still don't know are marked in angry red color.
I tried keeping the syllable count down to match better with the English singing. Na'vi is a very syllable-happy language. I'm sure lots of <ei> infixes could be added, but less is more.

Update: I've been told the missing words have been submitted to Frommer, so all we gotta do is wait.

I was going to do this same thing, but decided not to for the sake of certain words we lack, and it seems you have also noticed that. Hopefully we dont have to wait long for Frommer to put them out there. here is what would have been my take on it(aka my minor edits to what you have, because I agree with a alot(if not most) of what you posted. :

Enchanting
prrte'spuse'e
I think this doesn't mean the same thing at all. Enchanting is something captivating, enthralling, spellbinding, bewitching. It's nothing to do with pleasure, it's to do with attention and mind.
Since "eltu si" means pay attention, maybe eltuyusìm is even closer.

Your love shines the way into paradise

I was a bit surprised to find out the Latin origin of "sacrifice". It seems to be used in an entirely different manner now, than the root of the word.
If there was a word for "offering", that would probably be closer than "give". But it's a good guess.

My senses touch your world I never pictured
Oeyä aysì'eful 'ampi kifkeyit ngeyä a kawkrr ke rel soli oe
Yeah, I tried variants of this too, but I didn't like them because they were too literal. The English word has many meanings and like I showed in the missing word, the closest meaning here is to "imagine". Doesn't have anything to do with pictures or images. Other languages have translations for "imagine" that have nothing to do with pictures, this is an idiomatic English thing.

Of course, even I am not at all completely satisfied with my translations of these words which we dont have in Na'vi yet. I agree. At this time, i am probably going to wait until we get all our words back to start translating/writing songs in Na'vi. (personally I just hate having to settle with stuff like this in the meantime while the words dont exist. It changes the meaning too much. so I think I'll wait it out for now.)

Oel ngati kameie might be the most common way to say it, but poetic license and epicness of the language permits for word order change. oel kame ngat is very much valid. as we were given that kame ngat is an official short form(for the comeback to oel ngati kame) the <ei> is not required but is common and seems more courteous...

Word order is free and I've tried to keep the syllable count down.

Thanks, this was still an unresolved grammar rule when I wrote it, should be fixed everywhere now.

Walking through a dream
Terìran unil
I like 'among' better, sounds more spiritual. Besides, we don't know the exact meanings of mì yet as compared to English. Might have to use 'inside' instead.

I like 'among' better because it's Na'vi. The problem is not a shortage of words, more of understanding what the equivalent in English is. Just because "mì" has the translation "in" in the dictionary doesn't mean it covers all the English uses of "in".
I went with "among" because it's unusual and shows a different way of perceiving dreams (Avatar is a lot about the dreamworld and the waking world), even though it still works on poetic English, and because we're not sure what the Na'vi think about dreams, but if it's anything like native tribes on Earth it'll be a different spiritual reality to them.

Fair point.  I can certainly see "Terìran unilkip" being something they'd see...  But even from that perspective, I'm having trouble seeing it as working for that line in the song.  Perhaps it's less that we're interpreting the Na'vi differently and more that we're interpreting the song differently.

We do have SOME insight into how they see dreams...  There's the dream hunt, which is an induced halucination, and they call avatar drivers "dreamwalkers".  What we can glean from that, I don't know, though the former does tend to offer that they see dreams in a similar way to some tribal societies.

That was the point I was trying to make. A tribal society would not see you being "inside" a dream any more than you would be "inside" reality.
The line is "walking through a dream", referring to Jake going into his avatar body and his own body dreaming while he is in the avatar, and this is where he has all his adventures and where he meets Neytiri. To his physical body, it truly is all just a dream.

"Walking through a dream" would be the same as "walking through the forest" because Jake's dreams are as real as any tribal society would swear that their dreamhunts and hallucinations are.
The line should be the same if you replace "dream" with something else, I think you're misinterpreting the line because of this :)
It's not "dream" that's the important thing, it's the "walking through"
