I'm confused - I keep seeing a 3CD version mentioned but can't find it for sale anywhere. Where can I buy it? Was it just some sort of promotional thing?

Apparently unedited dumps of most of the score recording sessions had been sold (?) on a very limited base, or someone with access to the original recording data leaked it. Anyway: One set of those CDs appeared on eBay and got sold for over 3600$. A few days later a RIP (of those?) started circling the usual filesharing networks.

There's no perfectly legal way to obtain the full score yet, but there is a petition directed at fox to do a official release of the full score:

Weird - there are still some tracks missing from that version. The ones I noticed are "I see you" (but you can get that from the OST so that doesn't matter), the tune that plays right at the end before the credits doesn't seem to be there, and the music from the scene between the first encounter with Toruk and the "I'm a man of my word" scene - with the voiceover that starts "everything is backwards now". That is actually one of my favourite tracks, it's really emotional and allows you to feel his emotional struggle between the two worlds, and I'm disappointed that it's missed out from even the 3CD version...

Like I said, these tracks are leaks/bootlegs of the score orchestration, and obviously "I see you" wasn't recorded there. The other missing tracks you mention are in fact remixes of two tracks, which are in this set. The end scene track is a remix of "climbing iknimaya" and "becoming one of the people", the music of the transition between "Leonopterix" and "I'm a man of my word" is taken from "Gathering the Clans".

Ah, makes sense - judging by the cover art I found, I assumed it was actually a leaked version of a proposed full score consumer release. Obviously not.

Are the tracks really bootlegs? I mean: It isn't edited and so on, but if I did get it right, the stuff is exactly that from the movie - except the mentioned tracks. The stuff on the CD is more like a remix, a "best of" of the score. Some tracks are combined or renamed. Some stuff even isn't on the CD because of the playtime limits. So I would call the 3CD version the "real" soundtrack.

I don't know if the complete has been released intentionally and legally by Fox in a limited edition, or if someone somehow made a copy of the production files.

IMHO Fox really should release a high quality version of the full score - the day it appeared on Amazon I'd pre-order it.

To my understanding the 3cd version was a special promo for the execs at fox, either to hear what the music was and/or to get feedback what tracks to put on the final commercial version. This kind of thing happens quite a lot, especially in the movie industry where many blockbusters might first release a soundtrack and then if that's successful, a complete score(The Gladiator for ex.). Either way this never got published(for reasons unknown) and some route or the other few examples wound up in ebay, an eventually on the internet.
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

It doesn't matter where the tracks are used, that doesn't change that the original source was not an authorized distribution, so yes the tracks really are bootlegs.

All that can be said about this has been said.  This is not a released product nor is it, to anyone's knowledge, planned to be a released product.  Therefore any discussion about the contents of it is treading on rocky terrain of copyright infringement.
