After the tragic death of James Horner, the question becomes, who will step in his shoes?

I looked around a bit but the only thing I could find is an interview (or announcement of the same) from Feb 2017 where it's said, JC is still not sure.

Any other news that you've come across?

Or who would you like to see attempting to score the next movies? I think it will be quite a difficult task. Surely there will be themes that movie goers want to revisit. It's a fine line either to 'copy' Horner's recognisable score and for the new composer to find his/her own voice in it all. I certainly wouldn't want a rehash of old cues. On the other hand, other franchises also used different composers for the different installments (Alien, Harry Potter ...)

I would like to see someone like John Williams, Danny Elfman, or Eric Whitacre compose it.
Avatar, Furry, Amateur Astronomy, IT, PC gaming, Minecraft, Fortnite, music.

Hans Zimmer could be possible. :-\
I just hope that whoever will compose the next Avatar sounds will have the same level of harmony and style in making great soundtracks as Horner.

Exactly this.
I think that whatever composer will have hard work, because James Horner made really excellent soundtrack for first Avatar.

Hans Zimmer is also a good choice.

I've never heard of Eric Whitcare before ... interesting but I think that would be too choral/churchy for a sci-fi film. Also he is more for composing directly for a music hall less for film/television projects.

I really want Jeremy Zuckerman to do it. He did The Legend of Korra and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

That would be so incredibly amazing and epic! :D

It still bugs me that there is no official Avatar Last Airbender soundtrack and for Korra only the first season >:(

John Powell.

If you're not familiar with his work, just watch How to Train our Dragon.

First impulse was Hans Zimmer, since his soundtrack for Interstellar was pretty epic. Second thought was "hey, that dude who made the Apocalypto soundtrack should do it"....  .... too bad that this guy was James Horner  Fail.
So yeah, my guess would be Hans Zimmer, maybe? Dunno, there will be no adequate replacement for Horner, of course, since his style was unique imo, but yeah... someone has to do it/try it, kefyak.

I think his style would go great with a night bioluminescence scene. Calm and colorful, just like nights on Pandora.

Yeah, his work is really nice too.

I'm a touch surprized that no one has suggested John Williams yet.

I think that whatever composer mentioned in this thread surelly would be able make great soundtrack to Avatar 2. However I am worried that he will have really hard work to make such great soundtrack as Horner's soundtrack to Avatar 1... (Horner's creation was quite unique...)

I listened more Jeremy Zuckerman's work and he (and Hans Zimmer, of course) could make really great soundtrack.

Zuckerman is familiar with the kinds of non-traditional instruments that make the Avatar soundtrack what it is. That's why he's my top choice. Zimmer doesn't stray from his strengths usually (unless it's Interstellar or Sherlock Holmes).

Yeah, I agree with you.
I love Zimmer's work however maybe Zuckerman would be really better for this.
