The tribe-specific IRC server is now set up and running.

IMPORTANT PASSWORD NOTICE
I'm still in the process of setting up SSL on the server, so please don't use any password that's used for anything else. If someone intercepts IRC communication, and hacks your IRC account, I can neutralize the situation. I can't control your email account if it gets hacked.

Connection info:
Server: irc://navitribe.it.cx (navitribe.it.cx)

News:

  • Currently, there are only two permanent channels. (#Lobby, and #Offtopic) More will be added shortly.
  • There is also currently no MOTD. Once I write it up, (or if someone else wants to) then I'll commit it. If you have a MOTD you would like to be posted, send it to me either via email (txonari at skxawng.lu) or forum PM, thanks!
  • Since it's new, I don't know if there's any bugs or potential problems with the server. If anybody uses it, and finds one, please let me know either through PM or email. (txonari at skxawng.lu) Also, if I'm on IRC at that point, feel free to "/msg txonari [yourmessage]" me.
  • Currently things are a little rough. I'm still getting the hang of administrating an IRC server. If I screw something up, I'll fix it. Just let me know if I don't already know.
  • For a list of available channels, type "/list".

If you have any questions, please ask. If they are short, they might be added to the FAQ.

I'm in. =)

Now I'm just going to wait patiently for someone to walk in.

Good to see someone in! Though I was asleep by that time.

I'm hoping people occasionally use it, at least. At times, it might be more convenient than posting in the forums. Especially if you want a faster-paced discussion.

The server seems to be working well, it had some use from me today. Thanks for setting it up! :D

thread should be stickied so anyone can find this info easily and so they know it's important. It is your responsibility as a tribe member to at least try and join the irc server i promise it's fun. ;D

My apologies if this is going backwards a bit but is Skype not much easier. It is very reliable and I was under the impression that IRC required a host computer. Both support text and voice equally.

Letxuma Swizaw

clients are fairly smaller than skype clients, connections are far more reliable (i always get dropped from skype connections), and IMO irc groups are a lot easier to organize than skype groups, but i can see where you're coming from i was all for something other than irc until a few minutes ago.

Please note, my connection drops to around 18KB/s most of the time I can use it. IRC will work, but things that need a/v are likely to break.

Technically yes, IRC requires a host computer. It's just a server, and it requires very little bandwidth overall. (Unless hundreds of people start joining...) But my server takes good care of that. It has very little downtime, as it has a battery backup if my power fails. The only time it should go down is on occasional restarts due to kernel updates. And that generally takes about a minute or less. And, I have plenty of bandwidth to spare that I've been looking for something productive to do with anyway! :)

But as I said on another thread, skype isn't the best option for some people. People with older computers might not have support for skype, and people on phones, and people without mics. I personally have all required elements for skype... except that my parents would eavesdrop on every voice chat I have -- accidentally. (My house is small, so voices carry a lot.) That, and I can usually express myself better with text than with spoken words. I'm really quiet in real life, unless I'm really comfortable with who I'm talking to. And also, as Key'ìl Nekxetse mentioned, skype requires much more bandwidth to use than IRC. IRC is text, skype is text, video, and audio. If you have a slow connection, then you're not gonna be able to use skype very well.

I mean sure, we can still use skype. I just set up this server for anyone that wants to take advantage of it. I'm not going to try to force anyone to use it, or anything like that.

Also, Skype still doesn't support conference calls for more than 2. No point really.

Are you doing something server-side right now? I can't connect, or to be more accurate i keep getting forced off by the server.

Hrh I dunno, could have been on my side. Had to restart the main router a while ago, maybe some packets got caught from that or something... *shrugs again*
