IRC Server (info & howto)

(1/6) > >>

Txonari:
The tribe-specific IRC server is now set up and running.

IMPORTANT PASSWORD NOTICE
I'm still in the process of setting up SSL on the server, so please don't use any password that's used for anything else. If someone intercepts IRC communication, and hacks your IRC account, I can neutralize the situation. I can't control your email account if it gets hacked.

Connection info:
Server: irc://navitribe.it.cx (navitribe.it.cx)
Port: 6667

How to connect:
SpoilerTo connect, you need an IRC client. Under Linux, I recommend XChat. Windows users have mIRC and XChat, etc. And for Mac, there's a list here.

As an example, in a client there should be an option for a server. In that field put "navitribe.it.cx". If there's no field for a port, then put "navitribe.it.cx:6667". Your nickname is simply what you want to be referred to on IRC. (Mine is txonari, but I also have root & admin registered.) And if it asks for a username, just put something persistent there. Finally, click connect.
Registering your nickname:
SpoilerIMPORTANT PASSWORD NOTICE
I'm still in the process of setting up SSL on the server, so please don't use any password that's used for anything else. If someone intercepts IRC communication, and hacks your IRC account, I can neutralize the situation. I can't control your email account if it gets hacked.

Registering a nick:
To create a nick, input your desired nick either at the connect screen in your client, or by typing "/nick desirednickname". Once you have it the way you wish, type "/msg NickServ register apassword", replace 'apassword' with a desired (strong) password.

Unregister a nick:
To drop (unregister) your nick, type "/msg NickServ drop" and your nickname will be unregistered.

Change your password:
To change your password, type "/msg NickServ set yournick password newpassword". Replace yournick with... your nick, and newpassword with the desired new password.

Creating a channel:
Spoiler
* To create a channel, you /join the channel you want to create. ("/join #test")
* Next, register the channel so you're an operator by typing "/msg ChanServ register #test password". Replace #test with the channel that you wish to create. (The # is required, however.) And replace 'password' with your desired channel control password.
* Your channel is now registered!
* If you want your channel to be persistent in /list, and make it available even when you're not on, type "/msg ChanServ set #test guard on". This allows ChanServ to join your channel so it doesn't disappear. (Channel will disappear if the IRC daemon is restarted. But it is still registered under your name. If your channel disappears, simply "/join" it anyway, it will reappear on the list and all settings will be unchanged.)
FAQ:
SpoilerQ: Can I be OP? (operator)
A: You can be OP of your channel, or if you're asked to be OP of another channel by the creator of that channel.

Q: What does an OP do?
A: OP's have the power to kick people from channels, ban them completely, change the topic, etc.

News:

* Currently, there are only two permanent channels. (#Lobby, and #Offtopic) More will be added shortly.
* There is also currently no MOTD. Once I write it up, (or if someone else wants to) then I'll commit it. If you have a MOTD you would like to be posted, send it to me either via email (txonari at skxawng.lu) or forum PM, thanks!
* Since it's new, I don't know if there's any bugs or potential problems with the server. If anybody uses it, and finds one, please let me know either through PM or email. (txonari at skxawng.lu) Also, if I'm on IRC at that point, feel free to "/msg txonari [yourmessage]" me.
* Currently things are a little rough. I'm still getting the hang of administrating an IRC server. If I screw something up, I'll fix it. Just let me know if I don't already know.
* For a list of available channels, type "/list".
If you have any questions, please ask. If they are short, they might be added to the FAQ.

Esmond:
I'm in. =)

Now I'm just going to wait patiently for someone to walk in.

Irayo !

Txonari:
Good to see someone in! Though I was asleep by that time.

I'm hoping people occasionally use it, at least. At times, it might be more convenient than posting in the forums. Especially if you want a faster-paced discussion.

Key'├Čl Nekxetse:
The server seems to be working well, it had some use from me today. Thanks for setting it up! :D
Have karma!

Letxuma Swizaw:
thread should be stickied so anyone can find this info easily and so they know it's important. It is your responsibility as a tribe member to at least try and join the irc server i promise it's fun. ;D
