I can help
There are 2 ways I know
1. find 3 branches of = thickness about 2-3 feet long
cut one half the size cut one 1/3 the size and keep one the the same length
put the largest in the middle and the smallest at the front and the middle one at the back
tape or rope them together
make a notch at the top and bottem and string it
there a bow

lol first find a peice of wood about 2 2 1/2 inches thick either straight or slightly curved  and  4-5 feet long

carve the inside of   the first foot of both  ends of the bow  to 1inch and a half

(wood must be moderatly strong maple or oak will work great)

soak the wood in water for a few days to improve workability

proceed to carve the rest of the bow into a bow shape going with the grain  NEVER AGAINST IT!

you want this shape roughly

leave the handle uncarved for this moment

measure a string of 550cord or if you can find it sinue  cut it to where the string has about 2 inches of slack

cut the handle make sure not to make it too thin or the bow will snap at full draw

cut small slits in the end for the string and  pull it tight to where there is tension on the bow
use the exxess string to tie  around the bow and the string  to pull the bow slightly tighter
wrap the bow handle with leather and make a bracer
depending on the length of the bow and the length of the arrow determans the power of the bow

a bow longer than 4 feet will need a 4 foot long arrow to acheive full draw  but that arrow will have much more power IF you can acheive full draw

True but that is a bit more advaced my bow is more just somthing you can quickly and its easier to make with less supplys
but good job trebor you seem quite a bit like me

used one to drop a deer while hunting in michigan

i wont lie and say it wasnt a luck shot but it did hit the chest and dropped it

i think at most ive made 120 lb draw bow  and couldent draw it back far enough to acheive a good shot so i junked it

Txon Taronyu

Ya I have made a few of different types one like the way you said I kept it it is good
but I have made other types too

i have a question about this, is it ok to use hemp cord as the bow string or does it have to be flax or w/e or sinew

keye'ung makto

ever try a recurve?

last recurve i made ended up snapping at half draw and lodging splinters in my right hand

-----------------

hemp usualy doesnt have the tensile strength nessisary to pull 50- 200 pounds of force  550 cord  is military grade and can support 550 pounds easily.  if you can find it use that if not find a archery store and buy a string,  if you try to skimp on the string your bow suffers

OmegaQ1

ok thanks,im not sure what kind of trees i have in my area but ill ask my bio teacher what kinda trees there are. but first can you give a broader list of kinds of wood that would be ok to use as a bow

Oak is usualy pretty common
it's leaves look like this http://farm1.static.flickr.com/220/495877434_a58e025cbf.jpg?v=0   and it drops acorns  it's a very common tree  and grows all over the world.

yew: if you are lucky enough to have a yew tree nearby use that wood. it is VERY HARD TO WORK WITH but it easily makes the best bows
on yew DO NOT SOAK THE WOOD

maple:  also a common tree not so much as oak but it also is great for making your first bow,  it's leaves are distinc and easily recognisable because of the shape
maple is good to work with  because  it is extreamly forgiving  while workign with it

do not expect to sucseed in making a bow  your very first time, i failed easily 7-8 bows all hand carved with a knife, chisle and  plane  but dont be discouraged, the feel of a string on a well made bow is a true wonder.

for another challange try making your own arrows too

if we were allowed yo work with steel i could make knives and other type things

Hey, I would like to be a part of a permanant tribe.
Maybe we could host the summer camp tribes as well.
That way we wouldn't have to get two seperate places and we will all be able to meet up and the place would be in good repair all of the time for the summer tribe because we would be there the rest of the time.
What do you think?

I'm not a moderator, but for the topic of non perm, camps you should post to Na'vi vacation retreat by me Tirey Hawnuyu
