Ooh, that's a good idea. That'd be pretty fun, to kind of "decorate", if you will, as long as we don't go too overboard.

So we can make a decision and have some progress, I added a poll for buildings:

Good move. We could do with some putting some figures behind these opinions.

Well, I'm contemplating something again that could have an effect in the future, but I'm going to block it out for now.

Besides that, how much does wood cost with current inflation?

I jotted down some prices for wood where I work. I don't know what you want specifically, so I wrote down a handful of different types and sizes. The prices are per plank/board/sheet/etc.

11/32 ACX Plywood (4'x8')           $21.66
23/32 ACX Plywood (4'x8')           $35.06
Appearance Board  (1"x6"x6')        $3.81
Appearance Board  (1"x6"x8')        $4.91
Birch                    (1/2"x2'x4')      $13.99
Douglas Fir Decking (1.5"x3.5"x8')   $5.49
Shelving Pine         (1"x4"x8')        $8.11
Shelving Pine         (11/16"x12"x6') $20.49
Shelving Pine         (11/16"x11"x8') $23.99

Wouldnt we be using wood from the forest itself?

Tonbogiri

Mìhìl, I was under this impression too. It would be strange to bring in wood, not only for cost but also...why? Hopefully the area we settle in will have plenty of materials we could use for construction, and bringing in external WOOD to build with seems kinda odd...

I am hopeful, Eana, that you are want ing to know the price of wood for a project of your own? Please?

The building the computer engineers would be needing would have to be water proof, and I don't think we an achieve that with gathering our own wood.

Key'ìl Nekxetse

Why not?
Several methods exist, notably thatch.

I see your point, Eana, and I apologise for the tone of my last post...

If we were to construct out of wood, even if we brought that ourselves, we would need some sort of building contractors to make sure that the building is indeed functional.
Thatch is a good way, but it needs to be done well...

are we gunna work with electricity? we would need solar, wind and water powered stuff, I can take care of wiring and stuff, but the installations themselves are quite expensive.

guest2859

@Tonbogiri Don't worry about it, I didn't even receive the tone you said you were giving. ... And yes, we will be working with electricity, we decided we would be using a little of each primary source so we can sustain a constant flow of energy.

Tonbogiri

Good idea. Seeing as they all have certain drawbacks, using a combination would remove most if not all of the downsides.

We should discuss of which spots would need electricity, we can build some "houses" but they should not all be wired, say we build a "communications" centre, from which we can call outside help, which has food and water storage, toilets, showers, trauma kits, and perhaps even a helipad for help to arrive at.
This would most certainly need light and warming, just ordinary huts and houses wouldnt need that, they can be made windtight to keep it at an acceptable temperature, the rest of the forest could be lit with torches. as there's no tv's pc's and stuff, we'll probably be busy all the time, so we wont be that cold.

COME ON! Where did this thread go?
Where have all the good men gone,
and where are all the gods,
where's the street-wise urban hero
to fight the rising odds...

There are alot of new faces, and not a lot of old ones!

SO:

Assuming location is Geraldo Island, immigration is sorted, etc.

An advance party will go to set up several weeks before we "open for business", and this group will need to consist of the most wilderness-wise members (ACTUAL PROOF OF THIS EXPERTISE MAY BE NEEDED).
This advance group will be responsible for the setup of the tribe infrastructure, and will experiment in terms of building materials, agricultural possibilities, and hunting opportunities. Upon arrival of the rest of the tribe, they will be responsible for training of "new recruits"!

There will be a "command centre" of sorts at the heart of it all - this will be a sturdy, pre-fabricated building which will contain our links to the outside world - satellite phone, etc. This building will be supplied by a variety of sustainable energy sources (solar/wind/even biogas) and as such will contain any items that require a power source to maintain. This would include medical equipment and medication itself. This building could be of enough size to accomodate us should all our other buildings blow away...which brings me onto my next point!

All other buildings will either be hand-built or pre-fabricated. A system of accomodation should be sorted out beforehand (i.e. how many people to a bunk!), to determine exact numbers and the preferences of people to pre-fabricated accomodation should the budget allow.

Ow, me fingers hurt now...

everyone?...

I posted the update if this thread's progress above. Any fresh ideas? If not, we could always consider this our actual plan - but I feel there is much missing, and some more voices to be heard.

Keep up the dream!

When you say "A system of accommodation should be sorted out beforehand (i.e. how many people to a bunk!)", are you saying that more than one person will be living in individual housing? I mean, that might work out. But then, we'd have to have larger buildings than originally expected.

Other than that, everything in your plan seems fine. But also, what kind of proof of expertise do you expect is needed for the pre-setup group?

And finally, what's the latest news on a basic-speed internet connection for the tribe? (Specifically for keeping in touch with friends/family, but also for keeping up with the rest of the world, etc.) Some people seem to think it's not going to happen, some people think it is.

Hi Txonari,

In terms of construction, housing for individuals is easier (after all, at its most basic level only a place to sleep/to have privacy), but people may want some kind of help with building or even just someone to talk to! In the case of the latter, the buildings need only be slightly larger - plus, more people will be helping build them! It would allow a quicker "move in" time as well - eight people in four houses is quicker than eight houses...

In terms of expertise, I think that is a topic yet to be discussed. How to define enouh knowledge? The most important thing is not to have people who think they know what they are doing and then realise they are out of their depth. I am a perfect example - I have taken a few courses, but would never consider myself an expert. Remember, our location may be one that none of us have been to before, so the survival knowledge may not be completely valid.

Communications wise, I have always been under the impression that some sort of "command centre" would be part of the tribe. While not an intricate part of the truly primitive side, this building (which would be constructed from artificial materials) would have facilities for communication with the rest of the world - internet, satellite phone, etc. In response to a point made in another thread, if the location we choose suffers from extreme weather effects (in which case some form of secure shelter should also be factored in), then our command centre could be part of that secure shelter. I hoped that this building would be powered by some form of renewable energy, as its electricity demands should not be that high ("remember to switch off the lights when you go out...")

EDIT: In an attempt to become an "expert", I am aiming to take a 9-month course on wilderness living in the U.S. before this is set up. That is the best preparation I could possibly make. Of course, not everyone will be able to take these courses, but as long as some people can, or at least demonstrate correct knowhow, then we should be okay.

I am not an expert. I don't really think anyone is, but some know more than others. I have always been the kind of person who knew a little about a lot of things, but never specified in one area. I have taken a survival course in high school (the main words in that sentance being high school) but I have been on long camping trips since I was a kid and been backpacking once. When I was at camp we used to sleep under the stars. I guess the point I'm getting around to is that maybe taking a wilderness course or self educating ourselves would be a pertinant idea. I also wanted to ask about my health. I am 19, and I have bipolar disorder. I have to take medication every day in order to function normaly. I can bring my meds with me (enough for 3 months) but I remember that many had feelings against people who were dependant on a medication actualy joining the tribe. I don't know if those feelings have changed or not but I think it an important thing to bring up for those of us who may be dependant on a medication for our health.

Alright, thanks for the info! I think that it's a great plan. Naturally, it can't be totally finalized as of yet. Like you said, many voices to be heard. But, it's a well off start! ;D

Txalion, I don't really know about taking medications. I would not think that it would be a huge problem. Maybe an inconvenience, considering we have no idea the kind of healthcare the country we'd be living in has. Although, that probably will come up eventually as an issue.

I've also been researching some natural alternatives to modern medicine, and I've read about various treatments for bipolar disorder. I can't really vouch for the legitimacy of them, though. I'll continue to do some research, and I'll let you know what I find! :)
