As I learned during the translation of this song... this is not as well known as I thought It's from a poem by a German writer of books for children, poet and illustrator Erika Engel.

This particular poem was made into a song in the 1950s GDR ... you can find the most well-known version here for the melody. Unfortunately, I couldn't find an English version. – spaw oel futa fì'u lu tsukrol
