The genes of the serval differ in number from a cat's and are somewhat incompatible so that 'mistakes' happen. Often the matings do not result in viable offspring. The gestation of a serval is longer than that of a cat so if the progeny contain more serval genes than cat genes, then they need a longer gestation than the cat will provide and the babies can be somewhat weaker and more likely to die as a result.

Weird... A specie is supposed to be more exposed to going extinct in such a situation.

WE are Manx fans. Family rule on cats, they cannot have a tail... Why you may ask? Because we are cat people and we would end up with lots of neighborhood cats otherwise I am certain. So Manx for us. Besides, they are characters. Stubborn and take the meaning of being a cat to a whole new level.
