« on: January 05, 2011, 01:55:33 pm »
I should be working on my presentation for university right now but currently I am very demotivated ::)
So I remember one of my posts in the "Pictures of the new server" thread and as nobody has opened a thread like this here we go...

My home data center currently consists of the following machines:

HP/Compaq DL360 G2:
  • 2x Pentium III-S 1.4 GHz
  • 2048 MB ECC registered SDRAM
  • 2x 18.2 GB U160 SCSI RAID-1 (hot-swap)
  • Ubuntu Server 10.10 32 bit

IBM xSeries 336:
  • 2x Intel Xeon 3.0 GHz (with HT support)
  • 4096 MB ECC registered DDR2 RAM
  • 2x 36 GB U320 SCSI RAID-1 (hot-swap)
  • 2x 585W power supply
  • Windows 2003 R2 Standard x64

Homebuilt server which hosts my blog and all that stuff:
  • Intel Atom D510 2x 1.6 GHz (with HT support)
  • 2048 MB DDR2 RAM
  • 250 GB SATA2 HDD
  • Ubuntu Server 10.10 64 bit

Hmm.. sounds like I will have to wait a few more years ;)
No, I would actually never buy such an expensive system. This would be totally insane! I could get a nice car for that price o0

The machine on which I was running [email protected] from time to time has 48 GB of RAM, too ;)

kanu:
Pentium 4 3.0GHz
1.5GB RAM
40 + 200GB storage
WinXP Pro

It's mainly just a fileserver and a VM host.
It's got VMWare Server 1.0.1 installed with 6 VMs of random OS's for when I feel like playing around.

Got a second xSeries 336 (though it's a newer revision, built over a year later than my first one)

2x Xeon 3.2 GHz
4 GB RAM
2x 72 GB U320 SCSI (HW RAID-1)

Not sure if I install Windows Server on it or Linux. Maybe it's going to be my new terminal server (then I will have to choose Win) ^^

Also, GMod: I'm not sure what you're having issues with, the 60+ garrysmod servers I have running across a number of windows servers are generally rock-solid, run outside of VMs (but sandboxed in user accounts), and never "cripple"s the system...

Very late response but still, I don't know what was the problem either since I wasn't the one who took care about the servers, and by now I have thrown that guy out.

I don't know what caused it or exactly how it heppened. I only know that:
1. about once per month one of the Gmod server would lock up taking 100% CPU across all 4 cores (which is very strange seeing how srcds is singlethreaded normally), effectively blocking the more important VM that contains my web and mailserver for a few hours (until I noticed it and killed the process).
2. Leaking memory, unlike the CPU problem this is hard to solve. While I could limit a srcds.exe to only be able to use one core in Windows I don't think it is possible to limit the amount of memory a process use. After a while the servers would use up over 2GB of RAM, each. Needless to say I didn't like that conflicting since the same important webserver took a major performance hit here too.

My "server" is really just my old desktop. Hosts several websites and some game servers, running Ubuntu Server 10.04. Specs:

AMD Athlon X2 3800+ (2.0ghz)
2gb DDR400
2x 40gb WD in RAID1

No picture but I'm about to roll production onto my new server that will handle the transition to the next generation.

specopswww
Intel Xeon E5645 @ 2.4Ghz - 2Cores
16GB RAM
~10GB HDD daily backed up.

CentOS 6.2
Nginx PHP MySQL

It's a cloud server so it's not really my hardware, so the best I can do in picture way is this: https://p.twimg.com/AuDxN1OCEAAAgqO.jpg:large

Well, I must admit that I totally forgot about this thread. I'll try to take a picture at the weekend as it is not at my home.

Just took this apart this week when my company collapsed.  Now I need to actually save up for a 1/2 rack at the house...  These are my four lab/play servers.

Top is a Dell 2850 which has a pair of 3.2/800 single cores with 6GB of ram.  6x146GB scsi drives.

Middle two are P to V experimenting servers.  HP DL380 G3's with various 36 and 72 GB drives.

Bottom is my workhorse.  Dell 2950 III with a pair of 2.83/1333 quads pushing the max of 64GB of ram.  6x300GB 15K SAS drives.  8 nics (2+3 dual cards).  Have been running 2008 R2 Hyper V.  But contemplating either going to 2012 or cutting over to ESXi 5.  (Except free version of the latter is locked to 32GB.  Bugger...)

Out of picture I have another 2950 III with a pair of 2.66Quads and 16GB ram.  146GB 10K drives in that one.

Edit:  Wrong model number...oops.
Now they are sitting on my kitchen floor.  Need to go find a reasonably priced 1/2 rack and just run them in the garage...  ;)
