I'm having problems understanding the differences. Is it like the difference between having done something and was doing something?

Yes, that's correct.
To turn verb into imperfective form, use <er> infix: Oel teraron yerikit - I'm hunting for hexapod (just now, as there's no tense infix). Hunting is in progress.
To turn verb into perfective form, use <ol> infix: Oel tolaron yerikit - I hunted for hexapod. Hunting is completed action - but we don't know exact time of action, it is simply completed.
Both these infixes can be combined with tense infixes to tell if action is in progress/ completed in the past or future.
See also this thread about infixes, it can be usefull for you.
Oe lu skxawng skxakep. Slä oe nerume mi.
