Na'vi Quizzes
« on: August 07, 2010, 12:53:47 pm »
Hi,

I have been building a series of Na'vi quizzes (primarily for Project NgayNume) at my Geekanology UK website ... so far I have built 3 Na´vi quizzes:

Please note that there are three types of question:
  • Radio Button: A question and several options of which only one is correct. You will get 1 point for selecting the correct answer.
  • Check Box: A question and several options of which several may be correct. You will get 1 point for selecting ALL the correct answers, no points for incorrect or partially correct.
  • Free Text: A question for you must type in the correct answer. You must use the correct spelling including special characters such as "ä", "ì" & "´" (which, on a Windows system, can be input by holding down using the ALT key and typing 0228, 0236 & 0180 respectively) but case (capitals or not) are not relevant.

If you spot any errors in the quizzes I have created please let me know. If you would like develop a set of questions please send them to me by PM along with details of the level you anticipate the question/s being and (if a complete set of 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25) a preferred name ... all submissions will be credited (by default to your LN username).

These exams do not require you to create a Geekanology UK userid unless you are part of Project NgayNume ... if you are Karyu or Numeyu (Project NgayNume) please create  an validate a userid at  Geekanology UK so that the project coordinator (Tirea Aean) will be notified of your results. I'm still working on the scripts so that they will email the quiz-taker as well but I suspect that **will** require you to create an ID ... sorry but I didn't write the Joomla module I'm using. I am also working on trying to create an audio quiz but it's proving troublesome ... that's not helped by Firefox's cutting off the trailing ends of soundbytes I use (IE works correctly as, apparently, does Chrome)

Anyway, I hope some of you will enjoy the quizzes, moreover I hope others will submit some better questions because my ability level is only about middle :)

Thanks Tirea,

I've corrected those as far as I can.

Although you are right, in my version of the dictionary (11.286) it says:
Quote
ftxey...fuke: [ft'Ej fu."kE] PF phrase whether...or (derived from ftxey whether and fuke or not)

On words using non-standard alphabet characters I had to make a choice because I can't deal with all the possible versions of weird characters ... that's why I said above:

Quote
Free Text: A question for you must type in the correct answer. You must use the correct spelling including special characters such as "ä", "ì" & "´" (which, on a Windows system, can be input by holding down using the ALT key and typing 0228, 0236 & 0180 respectively) but case (capitals or not) are not relevant.

So, for question 13, the quiz system considered "pa'li" wrong and "pa´li" right (I looked for the nearest ALT-key usable character to the way the dipthong is used in Taronyu's dictionary) ... however I have posted up the question (whether or not multiple correct answers from a free text question is possible) to the MadBlanks module creator  :)

Took the quizzes, scores were as follows:
GK#1: 15 out of 20 (not necessarily true, the apostrophe character is SLIGHTLY different on the Mac, and I missed a couple of the "multiples")
NP#1: 19 out of 20 (missed "whether...or" with "Whether... or not")
NP#2: 15 out of 15.

I'm not going to lie, though... I felt like I was BS-ing a few of the answers... or maybe I just understand better than I really thought I did! ;D

See my comments above WRT to glottal stop ... you have to use ALT 0180 & unfortunately I can only test that on Windows :)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I unfortunately use a Mac...

I think what matters at the least is I know what "pa'li" is.  ;)

Although, I think if I had to use the right character... my guess is it would be (Option)+(e).  Ends up being ´ .  ... and I just figured that out here too...  ::)

Well if that's the common one and you can tell me what that is in Windows (ALT key) I'll happily change that one to the standard. Meanwhile I've asked the creator of MadBlanks if it is possible to have multiple correct answers for free text questions.

Well, hold on...

the standard character on a Mac that acts as an apostrophe is ' where as the character you used, which I assumed is more correct for glottal stops, is ´.

' or ´.  A small difference.

So... just to check, the ´ is the correct way to mark a glottal, srak?

Truth is I've no real idea either ... I just chose one that looked correct.

The three characters I needed (the "weird" ones from the perspective of these quizzes) were ...

"ä", "ì" and "’" (I am using"´" in my quizzes)

If I use the buttons above this reply box (as I type) or paste in from Taronyu's dictionary or use the ALT codes the "ä" and "ì" seem the exactly the same but the "´" does not so it is likely me that is wrong (in my defence it is the first "´" after the normal alphabet letters so it seemed logical) ... so what I need is to know how to identify that glottal stop character (in terms of the ALT code and/or how to get the same in other OS's).

why in the world are you using that apostrophe-ish-type-thing when you could just use an apostrophe. ' ' ' ' wassup wit that.... NO one uses that in writing because people just use the apostrophe key...people not taking the time to type ´ instead of ' will get stuff wrong... <I had to copy paste that btw> Im just saying if there Is ANY possible way you could use ' instead of ´ I would be very grateful. :D

EDIT: ok I saw your logic...ignore that first phrase.

the most common and easy way to write glottal is ' (just press the apostrophe key, works on ALL keyboards on all OS) but if you REALLY wanna get down and technical, THIS is the real way to mark glottal: ʔ  true apologies for sounding harsh, not meaning to yell at you here. :) if there is no possible way at all to change it or accept ' then I will just have to adapt and get used to being annoyed with that character.

It's not what is used in Taronyu's dictionary.

The quizzes are designed with Project NgayNume in mind so you're the boss ... what you say goes but whichever way it's done someone will complain (at least until I [hopefully] resolve the multiple free text answer issue) :/

psh. Eana Eltu database used ' and not <that other thing that i dont feel like copypasting again>.

hey. okay then. why dont we All make like hardcore linguists and type with IPA characters only? <cough...hack cough.>

EDIT: okay, I have Linux running on my computers now(dual boot)...I have the International keyboard with Alt-Gr deadkeys...it seems to me that Alt Gr + ' + ' = ´

im not so annoyed now. sorry for the previous angry rants.

in the end, does it really matter? both ways are ok, because the word will still be said the same. just saying.... na'vi is an oral language, so either ´ or ' should be ok, because we'll all know what it says.

i can still read both. heh, technology has foiled us again! dang you PC vs Mac......
