(Eight's) Sub Na'vi Rhyming Dictionary

Edit: 25^th January

The First Edition of the Sub Na'vi rhyming dictionary is now posted on t'internet for anyone who might find it useful.

Not really many changes from the Zero Edition posted previously; mainly I just tweaked some of the layout formatting and updated the word list to v7.34 of Taronyu's dictionary.

One of the esteemed linguists in the Quenya (Elvish) language camp came up with a backwards dictionary that listed and sorted the words from finish to start, as in:

-naxt   adj. great

aoxt   forgiveness

elext   v. matter (subject)
gnìxt   v. leave, abandon

kwext   n. club (weapon)
llw'ästmuxt   n. reclining flask (Pandoran flora)
llwyapmuxt   n. scorpion
masulstnaxt   adj. wise
mìxt   n. butt, rear end
muxt   n. poison

nal'ext   heart
naxt   great, much, many       
next   adj. awake
noxt   n. night

oxt   conj. if

pext   n. fire
ruxt   adj. strong

u'llxt   n. hookagourd (Pandoran flora)

And so on.  Once completed, all the rhymes, etc, become quite apparent.  The only difficulty I see in this is that Na'vi uses digraphs to represent diphthongs, ejectives and ng/ts.  Not sure I remember how the Quenya version handled them...

I have been trying to butcher a famous Kid Rock song by changing some of the more important words/points to Na'vi or na'vi references. Just stupid fun while I am doing something mindless. This is a gem. Thanks for it.

I'll look into those - cheers fella. I thought I had mentioned that case endings are not included, but will double check. I also think I have my brain working now and realised that verbs will not need to be infixed afterall (still double checking this too) - until we have so many words that a section like -o needs to be broken down further into -ko -po -mo etc. etc. when the infixes might start coming into play.

Updated my source to Taronyu's v6.637 and decided verbs do not need infixing afterall. So in good shape really.

But I think I'll leave this 0version (w/ the older source dictionary) up for a few days while I work on some formatting stuff and see if anyone has anymore feedback or preference on what to do about rr/ll.

Then I can put out the First Edition and move on to my next idea.

I once read that you have to grow up in a language to understand it mangled. In this case, I will probably file the backwards Na'vi dictionary for future use. In about 10 years or so...

There is a hidden value in this thing you have done, as well.

I have been working on a "Learn Na'vi the Easy Way" activity book (it focuses primarily on vocab--not a lot on grammar, as I am leaving that for the time to the experts). My style is highly visual, so lots of puzzles and fill ins, word seeks. I wish I had your *&^%$#ING dictionary last month! Try scouring the word lists and dictionaries for words that end in t--or start with G (well, once I had the dictionary instead of the old word list, that really made the "g" thing irrelevant).

But assembling word puzzles means you need to be able to see what letters words begin with as well as what they END with. I have learned a lot of words simply by flipping through the word lists and dictionary hundreds of time searching for words that end in "ey" (only one comes to mind at the moment).

So txan irayo again and again for your efforts in this. As to the activity book, I was going to release 11 pages (a sneak preview) today, but Frommer's announcement made such a splash that I think I will just hand it out to a few mods (thanks "Boss") to et their impressions on it first. maybe later this week. Maybe next week.

Please continue your groundbreaking work on this rhyming dictionary. BTW, I can't post my Kid Rock song because it is NOT family friendly, but it is hilarious. I have this dream about getting rich (somehow--in the next few months) and paying him a lot of money to record it--just substituting some of the words in Na'vi, because it is hi-larious.

I do have one more idea for it (beyond the basic updates etc.) But I think that'll be for the 2nd Edition if it all works out, or maybe a separate file released after the 1st Edition is done, and then incorporated into the 2nd. (Writing some test code this week).
