Vikibrownies brought up a great point about translating Shakespeare, we should do something different that what was done in Klingon, we should translate "A Mid Summer Nights Dream.",

There are 2 reasons why I among others think this is a better choice than Hamlet, first it relates more to the Na'vi, as there are forests and factions that can be related to in Avatar.

The second is because it would be a more original idea than translating Hamlet (which has already been translated by the Klingons) I'm not saying its a bad idea to translate Hamlet, I'm just saying that A Midsummer Nights Dream wouldn't be copying what Klingon did.

Viki brought up another good point, people should translate a specific part, it will give the character a different "voice" while being read.(not to mention being kind of fun)

I have one comment about the limited word usage we have. Use English words to fill the places that can not be translated, and once more of the Na'vi language is released, we can replace the English words with the actual Na'vi ones.

Those who want to participate, pick what part you want. Its on a first come first serve basis.

The following list is a list of characters which have been taken, and which still need to be taken.

Here is a website with all the lines per specific character http://www.opensourceshakespeare.org/views/plays/playmenu.php?WorkID=midsummer

If you want to participate please post on this thread, and send me a pm or an email. that way everyone know what parts have already been asked for.

Now just for verification, this is a literal translation, its taking Shakespeare's work and translating it into Na'vi

It is not an adaptation(which would make the entire play take place on Pandora, and in which case the Fairies would be Na'vi, the Athenians would be the Avatars, and the acting troup would be the RDA)

if we decided to create this adaptation, it will come after the original is translated, so we have something to work off. The original wouldn't make much sense if a Na'vi read it, but that is not the point.

This project will not be done in a day, it is a long term goal, geared to help people practice and understand Na'vi. Give it a few months then we may have something to show for our work.

This is not a "play" or a vocal performance(at least not yet) we can talk more about that once the translations are finished.

As of January 15th all of the parts have been filled, but if you stlll want to help, You can become an "understudy" or for the intermediate level Na'vi speakers, you can become an editor once a good portion of the lines are submitted.

Please send your finished lines, and your Adapted Character names to [email protected] so i can compile them, also be sure to include a Literal Translation of what you are saying in Na'vi, it will make things go a lot smoother.
Please Note that the even the names of the humans need to be Na'vi-ized.

Feel free to submit names, and whatever lines you currently have if you want some feedback

Good luck!
I saw this in september (I'm in the theatre department of the school) and it's one of my favorites.
Maybe I'll try to translate "tartuffe" :)
"Tìfnu! Oel ngati tspang!"
"Silance! I kill you!"
~Achmed, the dead terrorist.

I agree, a midsummer night's dream is definitely a more appropriate play and I would like to help (at some point, probably a long time away, what with the Hamlet project) but then Sigourney Weaver had to say Hamlet.  >:(

So yeah, when we get as much of Hamlet done as we can, I'll come over here and give you a hand.

Ooh! So much Shakespeare, so little time... You guys make sure to call on me if you need help, or give me one of the smaller roles. I'll try to make some more time for the projects here, just hope my "real" studies won't be ruined, haha

Taronyu Ayunilyä Alahe

omg! I want to join! but I'm not an expert.. so I'll try to do my best to help, but oe txoa livu if I'm not that helpful.  :(    ;D

i, as well, would like to take part in this. sign me up.

Ayzìzìt... i'm confused by what you mean... Do you want a part?

Kawng, by the time hamlet is done, we should be pretty closes if not finished ourselves, but your free to look over the final draft once we get one.

Nyx you can be Tom Snout, he has only a few lines if you want someone bigger let me know.

Taronyu you can be Snug, the joiner, he has even fewer lines to translate but for future refrences (lion = palulukan)

wward812  you can be Flute, he has a moderate amount of lines but not as many as some of the main roles.

Everyone please check the link for your lines.

Thank you all.

Have fun.

Is this a contest? Whose side am I on? Haha :P

Irayo for the part :)

Taronyu

So, how are we doing this? Do I just start going through my lines right now?

As far as not including words, I'm not sure. I think we ought to just have fun, try and work it out as good as we can.

Yeah just start translating whenever, We do have a google wave set up, but google wave can get very messy, so either Email me, or add it to the wave, and if your not part of the wave, you can still email me or ask Viki.
Some words are difficult, such as "love" which we do not have yet, thus i am just using the English word, and marking it until we actually do have a word for it. But for other phrases like my Lord, or My Lady, you can say stuff like Nawm Eyktan or Nawm Eykte for the Lord/Lady title. ( Nawm Ekytan translates to Noble(male) Leader// Nawm Ekyte i think is the female equivalent.)

It's not a real contest, although there might be a little bit of friendly rivalry.

True, but its not like that's a bad thing.

It rarely is unless it develops into a greedy corporation like the RDA. :P

I'd like to grab a part too. Though my Na'Vi is fairly limited.

Due to the forums being down yesterday, i was unable to update this list of people, and parts still available till now. Jaysc actually PM'd me wanting this part, so "first come first serve" unfortunately. But you can either be the first "understudy" or choose a different part. Sorry >.>

There are 2 female roles left, Titania(na'vi), and Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons.(dreamwalker)

How about taking the part that Taronyu Ayunilyä Alahe has, once she switches?
