Avatar Trailer Na'vi subs
« on: February 05, 2010, 04:59:19 pm »
This topic is for the translation of the Avatar Trailer, that we might add subs to it in order to generate interest and publicity for the Na'vi subs. From what I can tell, there are not too many unknown words, and this might be a good chance to get Frommer interested in telling us some other words for the ones we don't know.

Ftiafpi has transcribed the text for the trailer. Here it is:

EDIT: Added the current translations as well.
EDIT AGAIN: Some significant changes to most of the lines (Feb 6th, 2010)
MORE EDIT: Removed tokx from "a marine in an avatar's body" since uniltìrantokx already means "dream walker body". (Feb 8th, 2010)
FINAL EDIT? (Feb. 9th, 2010)

Divide and conquer I say. Pick some lines and post your translations. Once we have them all done I'm going to add them to the HD version of the trailer and add a blurb at the end regarding would you like this on the film as well as links to learnnavi.org.

Perhaps we should use fya’o (path/way) instead of start? Also, maybe we should use tok (occupy/exist) instead of ?

Quote
I became a marine for the hardship.
oel slamu marin fpi tìfpeio

Also, I think we should spell borrowed English words as they are normally spelled rather than converting them to the Na'vi spelling. That's just me though, either way seems fine to me, just seems like this would be easier for us and for the reader.

Quote
Told myself I could pass any test a man can pass.
oel pameng oeyä ronsem sìk oe tsivun emza'u tìfmetok tutean tsun emza'u san.

I wouldn't use oeyä ronsem here, I'd just use oeti. You need a to separate clauses there. Perhaps nìwotx should be in there as well for the "any test" bit. Also, your san and sìk are reversed. I would write this one as:

Oel pameng oeti san tsun oel emziva'u tìfmetokit nìwotx a tsun tuteanl emziva'u sìk.
1-ERG tell-PAS 1-ACC " can 1-ERG pass NOUN-test-ACC all that can male-ERG pass "
I told myself "I can pass any test that a man can pass"

Quote
All I ever wanted was a single thing worth fighting for.
Oe nì'aw namew u'aw tsivamsi fpi.

I'd turn u'aw into 'aw'u.

Quote
Ladies and gentlemen you're not in Kansas anymore.

Probably should add ma on tute and tutean. Also, I'd put fìkrr (this time) at the end for "anymore".

Quote

Definitely need tok here rather than . Not sure if tok is transitive but I don't think it is.

Otherwise it looks great. I took the liberty of editing your OP and adding these so that we can have a complete list of whats done so far.

They re-dubbed it for the trailer; instead of "The Sky People have sent..." it's "They have sent..."

And the current wiki version of the script...doesn't have the script. Thank goodness for history: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Na%27vi_language/script&oldid=340983062

Also, first cut. Needs a lot of work. http://www.learnnavi.org/temp/trailer_ninavi_cut1_hd,low.zip . Unzip, I compressed it with lossy mp4, and the video file requires an external audio file. I got too lazy to recode it.

And the last bit...  Taking Tsu'teyä response to these EXACT lines probably doesn't work best, because it was not quite 1:1.  And TBH most his translation I don't think is that great, not to mention hard to understand.  Also....  The dialog from the trailer isn't the same dialog from the movie.  For example "They've sent us a message" vs "The sky people have sent us a message".

So I'll do some re-interpretation BASED LOOSELY on his translation.  (Underlined parts I believe are direct lines from Tsu'tey - though not necessarily as a DIRECT response to the line, but it is nonetheless the translation for the line I put it on)

They've sent us a message.
Fol 'upxaret fpole' awngar

Lit the sky people have a message for us, this matches Jake's "Lu oer aylì'u frapor" form of "I have something to say to you all"...  (Underlining for here even though Tsu'tey says sawtute, since that matches the sky people->they change.)  I'd feel better if this was lolu or lamu though.

I am having trouble keeping pace on all of the lenition items.  It would be easier for learning if word constructions like that were to become vocabulary.

We figured that character names would remain english for this round, just to keep things simple, so that people could look at the trailer and pick out at least one thing they understand.

Again with the names, I think we should just use the English names. I'll agree set works better than fìkrr.  Kemì was "not in" but perhaps ketok would work better here. You not at not which in kansas now? My suggestion:

Whoops. For most of these we got all the nouns down and then went back and added plurals, erg/acc, etc. Guess we forgot this one. Also, I thought I had changed lu to tok, my bad. Kemì is supposed to be ke mì, lost a space in there somehow. Also, since we were keeping English spelling of names we weren't sure wither to do lenition or not but decided against it. Nìwotx fì'u taluna ngayä kem.
That doesn't really convey blame well..  At least not the negative connotations.  I'd throw in a verb (lu) just to make it pejorative.
Nìwotx fì'u längu taluna ngeyä kem.
Sounds good.

I need your help.
Zene oeru livu ngeyä srung.
Kin is need.
Oel ngeyä srungit kin.
Irayo, forgot about kin.

You haven’t gotten lost in the woods have you?
Ke lamu ngaru fya mì na'ring srak?
I'd add in the double negative Frommer loves.  And again use become rather than be.  And perfective.
Ke slolu ngaru kea fya mì na'ring srak?
We decided not to use the perfective since he's still continuing to be lost in the woods. But since we don't have a word for 'lost' perhaps it doesn't make much sense. I left it as the past tense that we had.

Quote
Did you forget which team you were playing for?
Ngal ponguti ke ivomum a nga uvan sami fpi srak?
Double negative FTW!  And switch the order so pongu is what's getting attributed.  And A PREPOSITION IS THE WRONG THING TO END A SENTENCE WITH!
Ngal ke ivomum kea futa fpi fìpongu nga uvan seri srak?
I keep forgetting that free word order does not mean you can end a sentence with whatever you want.

The strong prey on the weak, and nobody does a thing.
Tìtxurìl taron meypit, ulte kepo sì 'aw fì. taron meypit, ulte kepo sì 'aw fì.
Nobody is kawtu.  The rest makes no sense?
Tìtxurìl taron meypit, ulte kawtu ke kem si.
Whoops, double copy-paste FTL. Also, I know I changed this to kawtu, seems a bunch of my changes keep getting lost.

Quote
You've got one hour.
Ngaru 'aw san hour sìk lu.
I'd do a loan of hour as "äwrr"
Lu ngaru 'aw äwrr.
Again with us not changing English words since we're going more for simpler understanding rather than correct Na'vi pronunciation.

Quote
You knew this would happen?
Nga amomum fì'u slilvamu srak?
Omum is transitive here, and need someting to join the clauses.
Ngal amomum futa fìkem slayu srak?
Again, I could have sworn I changed those. About the clauses though, I'm pretty sure this should be fwa not futa.

Quote
Everything changed.
Fra'u lamatem.
Perfective.  That it changed in the past isn't important, just that it was changed.
Fra'u lolatem.
Really? I would assume the other way, that it's important to note that it happened a while ago but that it's implied that it already happened. I'm going to leave this as is.

Jake it's crazy here. Quaritch is rolling and there's no stopping him.
Ma Jake, fìtsengru keye'ung lu. Quaritch merakto ulte ke'u ftirvang poan lu.
Again Na'vi phonetics on Jake and Quaritch.  Double negative on stopping.  (Triple?  Maybe just drop the nothing.)
Ma tsyeyk, mì fìtsenge keye'ung lu.  Kwarìtsì merakto ulte ke'ul ke fterang kea pot.
I kind of combined our two, dropped the first 'ke' since I feel 'ke'ul' has an implied negative. Also, I added an <äng> to merakto.
Ma Jake, mì fìtsenge keye'ung lu. Quaritch meraktängo ulte ke'ul ftirvang kea pot.

LENITION!  And contraction.
Awngal 'ereko hunsìpit fa aysko sì ayswizaw.
Yep.

Well then I guess we better stop him.
Tafral oel fpìl ayoel ftivang poanìt.
But not Trudy?  (Well, really Norm, since the line is in response to committing the explosives straight to the tree of souls...)  And again, drop the gender, Na'vi tend to use gender neutral 3rd person.
Tafral oel fpìl futa zene awnga ftivang pot.
Sounds good.

Quote
[True Lies]
Tìngay Ayketìngay
LENITION!  And I'd say aysìtslengpeng for lies. (Plural nominilized false-tell)
Ngay Sìtslengpeng
Sounds good.

They've sent us a message.
Fol 'upxaret fpole' awngar
* This may be closer to the movie transcription...
Lu for 'upxare awngar
That they can take whatever they want.
Tsun mivunge futa fo new.
But we will send them a message.
Slä awngal 'upxaret fpìye' for

Fìtsenge awngeyä!
Looks great, added.
