Hey guys, so a few of us have just finished our little project of putting Na'vi subtitles on the Avatar trailer. It came out awesome and you can check the trailer out here: Avatar Trailer | Na'vi subtitles [HD]

Anyway, the purpose of this thread is for discussion of the subtitles themselves and anything else relevant to this little endeavor. Here is a transcription of the subtitles:

Well done :)Nice work. But i have question about "mevofuve"=>mevol=20,mevofu=26.Can you investigate it plz about mevofuve?

Um, double negative? I think it should be aynga ke lu mi Kansas set OR aynga lu kea mì Kansas set BUT in the second one I am suspicious of the use of kea adjective on an adposition (mì). So I would go with the first. I know it's kinda late now that it's been made but just saying.

Also, where are you getting the word Tanul?

Haven't finished looking over the whole thing yet.

Haha I love that you translated the movie titles too. Normally I can't stand translated titles, but this was just hilarious. ;D

Also, it's funny how, in a language with less than 1000 words, you can make subtitles more accurate than most of those I've seen in "real" languages. Great job! Now you just have to build a cinema on Pandora and teach the Na'vi to read.

Mevofu is 268 = 2210

It should be: Mevosìng (248 = 2010)

And why -ve suffix? Does it work as english -th suffix?

This is what I get for not checking someone's translation. You're totally correct.

The double negative is something that we have seen in Na'vi canon before and doesn't turn into a positive. This is obviously open to debate though. As for Tanul, where are you getting it from? I don't see that in there.

Aaawesooome!!  ;D

The only thing I'd change is how you write Jake Sully in Na'vi. Based on how Tsu'tey and Mo'at pronounce it, it would rather be Jeyksuli. Or you could've simply left it in its original English from, as you did with Kansas and Titanic, but this halfway solution looks weird to me.

On a side note, I find it strange that the Omatikaya would transcribe Sully with a "u", when they have never seen it written down -- and probably can't read/write at all -- and a sound much closer to the English one ([a]) is readily available in their language -- i.e. Jeyksali.

Well, since we figured that this was going to be read by predominantly English speaking humans that we were going to leave proper names as they would be spelled in English. We put them together though to match the subtitles in the movie.

As for Fì'u fpi awnga tok fìtsenge. Yeah, you could do it that way as well but we wanted to use "lun" (reason) to help convey that it's the reason that they are here.

So what does it mean literally? "We are here for the sake of this thing, why is."? I don't get it :(.

Awnga fìtsenge tok fpi fwa lun lu
We here exist for.the.sake.of this.thing.which reason be
This thing is the reason we're here.
This is why we're here.

There was a pretty lengthy discussion on this one. The lu is needed because without it the second clause would say "this thing reason" and without lu the whole sentence would say "This thing reason which we're here." Remember a good way to think of lu is as an equals sign. "This thing = reason (which we are here)". In this case, lu takes the place of the English "is".

Ataeghane

OK, I think I nearly got it. But I know "a krr" means "when". So why doesn't "a lun" mean "why"?

Frommer uses Tseyk for Jake :P.

And he's right to do so, as [ts] is the closest sound the Na'vi have to [dʒ] (i.e. the first sound of "Jake" in English). However, the characters pronounce his name with a [ʒ] (that can be found in azure and garage in some dialects), so the use of the foreign letter j is justified somewhat. You are right though, the proper Na'vi transcription would be Tseyksali. Hmm, anyone in need of a forum name? :D

OK, I think I nearly got it. But I know "a krr" means "when". So why doesn't "a lun" mean "why"?

It does.

"a krr" translates to "that time" which is synonymous with "when" (non question form).
"a lun" translates to "that reason" which is synonymous with "why" (again, not a question).

So, yes, "a lun" does mean "why".
