AvatarCon - The Convention to end conventions!

I wasn't sure if this was the place to put this topic but after poking around, this seemed like an alright spot.

So has anyone else thought about the idea of an Avatar Convention? I am a big fan of conventions and go to a few every year, it makes sense that something this big would get this sort of treatment. Really I think it is only a matter of time until it happens, hopefully through "official" channels. I'm not sure Fox realized the sort of behemoth the movie would spawn. Someone needs to hire more people!

I can see it now:

• Panels on the upcoming movie and related works
• Panels on getting license and copyright for merchandise
• Panels discussing things we can do here and now for our own planet
• A huge workshop for those that want to learn the language
• A game room where any sort of Pandoran games can be played (perhaps including those imagined by the Na'vi)
• An art showcase and contest for all things Pandoran
• Mega dealers room where everything imaginable from Pandora and the Na'vi could be purchased or contracted!

And more things that aren't even coming to mind right now. Can anyone else envision the halls filled with Na'vi and human alike roaming around in complete happiness? Can you hear the Na'vi language being spoken in smatterings by passer-bys and even in full conversations? Wow, that would be something to behold!

Now, if only this really happened and wasn't on the other side of the globe from where I live. That would be something special.

There will probably be Avatar events at established conventions at first, but smaller/local cons will probably flourish, and then big, devoted cons may come later.

But either way, it is a grand idea.

Sounds like it could be fun, although I cringe at the thought of rampant commercialism infringing on my carefully crafted mindset of Pandora and the Na'vi.

If done right it could look very good, but, yes, that was a perfect example of how NOT to do it.

We can combat this in a number of ways. One would be to donate part of the profits to certain nonprofits that support the way of thinking and living that the Na'vi embody. Another would be to have it in a location that has good mass transit and seeks discounts with hotels that are 'green'.

I understand the concern of it being something we are fighting against but having a good support and community is also important. Besides, getting information to people about solid ways to move things toward something better is important enough, I think. As Coyote said, if this gets big enough to be its own thing, it will be a great force for change.

What would be a good list of possible recipients of donations? I'd recommend Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd, but those are personal favorites. In the USA there's also the community animal shelters (especially rescue and "no-kill" shelters).

AvatarCon should be held in a forest, large field, the Amazon, etc. Booths would be in trees, transport would be horses or on foot, food provided by hunting (and catering). Lodging in hammocks, activities include simulated battles foam-sword style and bow shooting. That I would go to.

That is some solid ideas right there. If there were paths already setup so people wouldn't harm the forest and shrubbery that would be even better. I'm cool with booths being tee-pee style or something that was not invasive. Lodging in hammocks sounds crazy fun. The simulated battles would be alright, not my thing though. I would be down for some story telling around the fire-pit (fictional Na'vi hunting stories would rule).

So it would need to be held in the summer or some place warm, that has a forest. Probably summer. I'm liking this idea more and more.

@Coyote: Yes, animal shelters and larger orgs would be good. I was also thinking a re-forestation nonprofit? I'm sure they exist but don't know of any.

We'd have to be careful to ensure that environmental damage doesn't happen. The Burning Man festival takes a number of precautions into account; it might be worth looking at their organization.

These things usually grow organically out of other events rather than starting as their own. In this case, it'd probably be easier to get a fan track at an established con going first rather than trying to start a new one.

All these cons that I can't go to because I live in the UK, bah. If an avatar con is ever done, I hope that I can get one closer to home
