Discovery Channel Boom-De-Ah-Da Song in lì'fya leNa'vi!

So, I imagine you have all seen these awesome commercials by the Discovery Channel:

The World Is Just Awesome

Simply wonderful if you ask me, catchy tune, really great images, and wonderfully inspiring.

Now, what this project is all about will be taking the music/theme of the song and putting our own lyrics and visuals onto it.

In the spoiler below is a transcript of the original song. However, this is for ideas only, the idea here is that people will come up with a few unique sample lines. Me and a small group of editors will go over them, pick out the best 20 or so and put them up for a vote. The top 5 or so will be the starting point for the song and we will design the song around those 5 lines.

Once we have those 5 (or so) lines we will collaboratively work on the full lyrics of the song with the community throwing out full or partial ideas for the song with me and the editing group deciding the direction and ultimate shape of the song. Probably the biggest issue will be getting the rhyming to work in Na'vi. Also, some care will have to be taken to make sure that the lyrics match with the 2nd part which is...

The visuals! Now, all this will be shot by members of the community! It doesn't matter if you have a crappy webcam or whatever (but at least 640x480 resolution will be STRONGLY preferred). One key thing though is the visuals must match the lyrics (duh) so we'll have to make sure that the lyrics we decided on have someone willing to film themselves doing/at/with the subject of the lyrics. Finally, when we do the filming, obviously I don't expect everyone to have a boom mic or whatever with them so, in all likely hood, the audio from the footage will be horrible. Thus, each video segment will also have to have the lyrics recorded in a quiet setting by the subject in the segment, the better singing voice and mic you have the better this will be. This audio will then be spliced in with the music with the video segments added. We will have to keep the video segments ambient audio though since it wouldn't be very interesting if all you heard was the singers and the music.

So, as you can see, this will take a lot of effort and a lot of coordination but I think that, if we succeed, the end result will be amazing and I think will really show the power and wonderful spirit of this great community!

The top 5 lines that we will build the song around are:

Lu yawn(e) na'rìng - (I) Love the forest
Lu yawn(e) oer txampay - I love the ocean
Lu yawn unil si - (I) Love to dream
Lu yawn oer keye'ung - (I) Love insanity
I love the mountains (need a word for mountains)

Some additional details:

My overall idea for how this will be goes something like this.

Music and vocals pitch/tempo will be the same as the original. We'll have a funny skit, in English, at the beginning of two people talking about the movie Avatar that goes something like this;

Person 1: "You know, I love that movie Avatar, I just can't get it out of my head! It's such a beautiful world."
Person 2: "Yeah, me too. Though, you know, that movie made me realize how much I love the world we have right here. There's so many amazing things all around us."
Person 1: "Hah, this sounds like an intro to that Discovery Channel ad, the one that goes "I love the whole world...""
Person 2: "You know, we should totally combine the two, lets show everyone how amazing the world is, but let's do it in Na'vi!"
Person 1: "Hah! Okay, I'll start...[music and first line in Na'vi]"

We then cut to different people, all over the world (bonus points for obvious international locations), singing lines in Na'vi (with English translations underneath). Some sample lines could be something like; "oeru lu yawne na'rìng, oeru lu yawne hufwe nefä'em, oeru lu yawne fraswaw a tìrey tserìng."

Now, obviously, it will be hard to get this many fluent Na'vi speakers/singers. Not to worry though, if you have some great ideas for lines but can't get them into Na'vi, just submit them in English (or any other language for that matter). If you want to sing but aren't good at pronunciation I plan on making lyric guides for the song once we're at that stage. So, come one, come all!

That said, I'd like to get as many cultures represented in this as possible. To do that, I imagine that we'll have some language barriers. If someone would like to translate the general gist of this project into their native language that would be really helpful.

Lastly, some deadlines (to keep this project on track). These deadlines aren't hard and will probably change.

For the musically inclined, here is sheet music for all parts. The song is broken down into the following instrumentation:

  • Piano
  • Vocal Solo / dual harmony
  • Choir backing
  • Viola
  • Cello

No violin?

Oh well.
If you ask me, music these days has too much sax and violins.

It's true. Violin is incredibly competitive because so many people play it (like me).

Meh, I wouldn't have any means of recording it anyway, so I guess I wouldn't be of much help there.  :(

I think it's a brilliant idea!  8)

now to go off and think of some lines...

Hi,

First post here, but this seems like a great project, so I thought I'd chip in.

I think the idea is fantastic, and will look very cool when done.

My expertise area is music, I'm an orchestrator and semi-composer, and I think if you're going to go through a reasonable amount of effort for the rest of this, you need Avatar-themed music. Even if you have lyrics and visuals that make it obviously Avatar, I still don't think it'll give the full effect. However, I don't think you should change from the original arrangement, except for changing syllable counts which will obviously be needed.
I think a re-orchestration at least (with intros and outros) would make it suit more, and allow for a bit more of an effect, especially if done well. Even if it's not done well, it'll at least make it more unique without losing the original.

Also, as a note, I'd recommend orchestrating to say full orchestra, then mixing in any live parts we can do and sampling the rest, which I can do. I can also record the parts for trombones, violas, cellos, flutes, piccolo, and piano.

Is it worth me throwing together an example/approximation of what I mean? Or do I make sense? Does anyone even like the idea?

I'm mildly musically inclined but Seabass is a kick-ass piano player and music enthusiast so I think if I don't understand it, he will.

Anyway, I see what you mean and I agree that if we can make the music more Avatar themed not only will it sound better but it will make this project really stand out from the rest of the other fan-made "Boom-De-Ah-Da" songs. I'm wondering how the intro's and outro's would work with the music but I think it's something worth looking at.

As for the full orchestration, now THAT would be something amazing. I totally like that idea and think it's something worth pursuing. If you're willing to throw up a sample then I'd love to hear it.

The intro and outro's could be very simple, what I was thinking is basically styling the intro to sound like the opening of "You don't dream in cryo" and the outro to be a reasonably simple solo exit, which would work well with the piece as it is.

I'll throw together a simple mockup. Out of curiosity, would it be sticking to the same number of verses as the original? Apart from the burdens of translating and extra people, that might allow more creativity on both the musical side and the "story" or lyric side.

That certainly sounds interesting, I think it could be quite interesting giving the tune a more "native" feel to it. :D  (As long as it still has a stupid catchy tune you can't get out of your head :D )

On the translation side, I think we could seriously cut down on syllables of the basic phrase...  The full phrase is of course "Lu yawne oer ..." 5 syllables (Or 4 if you pronounce oer as wer as is common)

Now taking a little poetic license, and following what seems to be common, we can drop the e off of yawne since the next word starts with a vowel there, for "Lu yawn oer" - 3 syllables, as much as "I love the ...".  In a pinch, maybe even drop the "lu" for just "Yawn oer" - 2 syllables.  And if you need an EXTRA syllable in a line, you can either put the e syllable back in, or more preferably (To keep all lines starting the same) "Lu yawn oeru".  Of course being limited to 5/6 syllables a line is going to be tough.  Maybe for longer once, take up two lines of a verse and make it 11 syllables.

Some ideas based off the original...

Lu yawn(e) oer txampay
Lu yawn(e) oer ean pay (a)tsawl
Lu yawn(e) oer na'rìng
Lu yawn(e) ikran tswayon
Lu yawn(e) kifkey nìwotx
Ulte fraw(='u) arusey
Pum te yata (etc)

And of course we HAVE to have in there somewhere...
Lu yawn(e) oer tìpxor
Lu yawn(e) oer kxangangang :D

Oh, and here's the 2nd Boom-De-Ah-Da video that Discovery Channel did. Note that this one includes the 4th grade class one I liked. Perhaps, if they do a third one, we could be it it?

Idea #1: We all videotape ourselves singing either the whole original song or part of a song then somebody cobbles it together. All of us painted blue, of course!
Idea#2: We all work on lyrics and then once the final version comes out, attempt Idea #1 with the new lyrics.

Now when is somebody gonna do this with clips from AVATAR?

I love Neytiri (5 syllables)
I love Palulukans (6)
I love the Ikrans (5 again)
I love the Eastern Sea Tribe (7, normally 6)
I love Pandora (5 again)
