So, I personally feel that the pocket guide is simultaneously the best learning tool for beginners and the least up to date of all our "publications".

So, I'm wondering if there is support to get either a collaborative or open source pocket guide made to replace the existing pocket guide. I feel that credit should still go to Karyu Amawey for the pocket guide but I personally feel that the guide has gotten too out of date and is started to create bad habits and misinformation with beginners.

Thoughts?

I fully agree, we do need a new pocketguide (and perhaps a revised pocketmod while were at it).

I know I got flamed for this last time, but since Karyu Amawey didn't write the PG, and never gave credit to the people who did, even after promising to do so, why exactly would we credit him for anything?

Oh, I had totally forgotten about that. You're totally right. Do you have somewhere that lists the original writers cause I would like to contact them about getting on board this. Also, we should contact Taronyu and see about combining the information in the PG with his incomplete (but very comprehensive) grammar guide.

The grammar was a verbatim mirror of Wikipedia as it existed at the time, with a few formatting changes. Kwami was the author of that, taking from the sources listed on WP. (Another editor later added the chapter on history, but that was later and didn't make it into the PG.) Amawey in later editions of the PG made some changes in wording or example after I complained of plagiarism, many of which unfortunately were errors. The dictionary was the appendix of the SG, along with whichever errors crept it when it was originally posted online at suburban dictionary: http://www.suburbandestiny.com/?p=611; to this (which involved quite a bit of formatting) he added guesses as to parts of speech, generally w/o any apparent basis.

Taronyu's done the same thing w his grammar, but is explicit about it, saying that he hasn't had time to rewrite the grammar, and so is just copying Wikipedia for now. That way the reader can trace the editing history, see the comments on changes, and knows where any errors or unwarranted assumptions may have come in. Similarly his dictionary is an updated edition of the SG appendix, but with meticulous sourcing. There are some assumptions that I think are unwarranted, such as *tswon for "fly", but he marks them as his personal derivations.

It's a bit weird to talk about credit when everyone's using pseudonyms!

We could just take the Wikibooks book. It's open source as long as it's credited, and is a much updated version of the PG grammar. It also has a glossary of the linguistic terms used. That would at least get us up to date. Then in later editions we could work on rewriting it at a more basic level for the jargon-challenged.

Hey everyone, I really like the idea of everyone giving me ideas for what they would like to be seen in the new Pocket Guide.  I have already sent an updated one a few weeks ago to Seabass, however he is taking longer than I hoped to put it up :p  I will make this a sticky thread, so that way just like Taronyu's Dictionary, everyone can add their two cents and let me know what they would like to see, thanks!

Whoops, you locked it rather than stickying it. I fixed it.

Karyu Amawey

Ah, thank you!  Ive actually already moved the topic to another forum instead, so as to make it more relevant to the topic at hand.  The new thread is here: Our Pocket Guide  :D
Again, irayo!

Okay, cause if the pocket guide is being kept up to date then this becomes kind of moot since I'd rather see the pocket guide be updated rather than trying to create something new.

Yeah, no need to reinvent the wheel. On that note, unsticking. Keep my stickes to a minimum >:( Thats why the projects guide is for.
