I'm currently studying Mandarin as well. I found some people on twitter who started a Mandarin Monday Google Wave project. The idea came from people learning the languages by simulating topics and situations. However, the great about Google Wave is, is its ability to make other people edit other people's messages and help when they make errors! This is working really well with the Mandarin Monday project as there are native Mandarin speakers on the wave as well that help with mistakes.

There might not be a native speaker who could join us, but I bet there are a lot who know Na'vi better than me or others. The Mandarin Monday project is little bit slow at the moment, but I bet more people would make it more busy and helpful. I've learned so much from the Mandarin Monday Google Wave already, so I reckon a Na'vi wave would work really great.

But I'm just not talking a general Na'vi wave, but Na'vi topics. We could perhaps make a new wave every two weeks with a new topic and people converse in Na'vi. For instance a topic could be "going hunting".

I'm currently a University student, so I don't have time between studying Mandarin and Linguistics to try and maintain the Na'vi Wave, but I think this is still a great idea. I'm going on holiday on the 4th of January and coming back on the 8th. I'm however, making an open call for people using Google Wave to add their Wave usernames here so we can start a wave discussing this further. Such a general rules and ideas and topics and frequency of new waves and such. Also, the Waves will not be closed. If you have friends that want to help. Please invite them to waves so that everyone can learn.

So post your Google Wave username and I'll add you and get this thing rolling.

EDIT: I'm away till 8th of January. So if you want to join the wave. PM your details to FragRaptor

P.S. - If you need Google Wave I've got a few invites to send out.

It's a good idea.  I do like how it shows what has been edited, and it seems very simple to pick up.  It would be a really nice way to keep things up to date when it comes to finding new words, a better way of saying the things, and cataloging data.  I didn't watch all of the video, but can we put video or unprotected audio files in the wave, like what they did with the pictures?

Kip Pizayu

Yes, you can upload files and embed youtube videos.

Hey, can you add me? [email protected] I'm really REALLY new to Na'vi, barely grasping it and need lotsa help. Help me? This seems like a great idea.

geezbones

Phew, and I was worried I would be the only newbie to the Na'vi world in this google wave thing...  :D

thanks for adding me btw!

Google \/\/ave was suggested back before this forum existed. No one had a \/\/ave account and those are not invites you have, those are suggestions to Google to say, "Hey add this person to \/\/ave earlier."  but if you are having a \/\/ave, [email protected]. And yes that is my \/\/ave account.

Ok right invited you guys!

I just want to make it clear. The first wave is just a place where we can discuss how we can use Wave as a way to learn Na'vi.

please invite me , im [email protected]

Invited you!

Also, I guess the Wave topic won't work as a discussion place, 'cause the people are just too hungry for learning. hehe. So, do you guys have other suggestions as to what you want from the wave? I reckon simulating mini-roleplay situations would be awesome. Such as everyone "going hunting". Then we all talk just in Na'vi. Then we can correct other if they make mistakes.

Invited. The Wave is very active, but damn it's a little crazy at the moment. We will have to figure out some sort of guideline to keep discussion civil and not all over the place.

But it seems that people like the idea of mini-roleplay situations where we will be forced to chat only in Na'vi (or at least try to).

Oh, I've got invites too!
Drop me a PM or email to get one.  I'm not trying to hoard them, if you even think you might want one, I'd be happy to pass it on.

FragRaptor has suggested a translation wave, which is currently being set up now. It's great place for people to help with translation.

Ok so just so that people can see how I use it to study Mandarin and how the format of replying works:

This is the first Wave we had where everyone introduced themselves in Mandarin. Note the clear guidelines:

Here is an example of me making many errors and someone helping with the text in red. Also note, the the guy asking me a question by replying to the next level.

I hope we can also gain a nice structure to Wave, otherwise it's going to be chaotic!

Whatever happens people please resist your urge to ask people how their day was. Unless it is in Na'vi or course ;)
